Running things back with Holly Holm won’t get Ronda Rousey to come out of retirement again.
Rousey (13-2) returned from an almost 10-year layoff to submit Gina Carano in just 17 seconds in the MVP MMA 1 main event less than two weeks ago.
Holm, who was the first person to beat Rousey when she claimed the women’s bantamweight title with a stunning knockout at UFC 193, wasn’t surprised to see Rousey quickly submit Carano. She explained how she’s always been willing to rematch Rousey since the moment she finished her.
“I’ve always been open to a rematch with her since the day the fight was over,” Holm said on “The Ariel Helwani Show.” “So if she wants to rematch, I’m game anytime. I’ve always said I’m good with a rematch. Right after the fight, it was, ‘Hey, do you want to wait for the fight with Ronda?’ I said, ‘Well, sure, how long are we going to wait?’ There was no answer because we had no answer from her. She didn’t say yes. She just, nothing.
“And I was like, ‘Well, I don’t want to just sit and wait because I don’t know if she’ll ever want to fight or ever want to rematch, or if she does come back, will it be with me? I don’t know.’ There was no answer. So I chose to keep fighting, and then it was over a year after we fought, and she fought (Amanda) Nunes and was done. But I’ve always said I would rematch her, and I still would to this day. I just think that she wanted to come back, have a fight and then be done. No hate on her for that.”
Rousey said coming back for Carano was a one-and-done, and she’s sticking by her word.
“I think I definitely have the ability and the opportunity to be able to clean her clock and re-write all of that,” Rousey said of Holm on the “Up & Adams” show. “But it’s no longer important to me anymore. It doesn’t haunt me. It’s not the most important thing in my life.”
