En 1812, para burlarse de Napoleón, que fracasó en Moscú, la prensa satírica británica empezó a utilizar el término del “general Invierno”: el frío, la nieve y el barro que frenaron durante dos siglos los intentos primero de los franceses y después de los nazis alemanes de conquistar el gigante ruso. La idea se hizo muy popular para explicar la infinita resistencia de los rusos, o ahora de los ucranianos.
