Awa Fam was one of the most exciting players entering the WNBA draft this year. The Spanish international had built her reputation around her high basketball IQ, her ability to cover the court and her contribution on both ends of the court. 6’4 center’s physicality and hustle are also two main features of her game.
Fam’s commitment with her Spanish team Valencia Basket, clashed with the start of the WNBA season. She helped them clinch the championship. Now she finally made her much awaited WNBA debut and played her second game as well. The number 3 pick had a promising debut with Storm.
She scored 10 points with 2 rebounds in 20 minutes played off the bench in her debut. She helped Storm win the game 97-85. Her movement on the court seemed like she was settling in well with her teammates. Especially fellow rookie Flau’jae Johnson, who even assisted her first WNBA basket. After her debut, Awa Fam talked about the special bond she has already developed with Flau’jae.
“I just met her in the draft. So, it’s crazy. Because it’s like, I met her only one time and she treats me like if I’m her baby, you know. For her, it’s like she’s always talking with me. When I was in Spain, she’s always texting me, telling me how is the practice, how is the game,” Awa Fam said about Flau’jae Johnson.
“So I just love her energy off the court. She’s always with a smile. She’s always bringing energy off the court, on the court all the time. And she’s like one special person I think. And I think all [in] the team love to have Flau in the team,” she added.
Awa Fam talks about her role model A’ja Wilson
Awa Fam has admitted multiple times that her role model is A’ja Wilson. She has revealed that she models her game after Wilson. While talking about her she said that she thinks A’ja Wilson has something special that other players don’t.
She had no words for the impact A’ja Wilson has on the basketball court. She called the MVP, one of the best players right now. Awa Fam praised Wilson’s energy off the court that is most special to her. “So I just she’s just my model because she has a lot of responsibility in her team. She takes a a lot of decisions. She’s, all the time, thinking about her teammates. She’s going to be always my model because she has something special that not other players have,” Awa said.
