We’re 49 days out from the start of the FIFA World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. And thus far, the main theme around this tournament has been the astronomical financial toll that FIFA is trying to place on fans.
Turns out that even applies to FIFA’s resale platforms.
According to a report from ESPN, ticket resellers are going as far as to list seats on FIFA’s ticket marketplace for millions of dollars. This comes after fans have complained about the inability to acquire face-value tickets and FIFA deceptively holding out desirable seats within categories for an eventual upsell.
Now, while FIFA didn’t set these ridiculous resale prices, it also doesn’t put a cap on what resellers can charge. FIFA also takes a 15 percent fee from both the seller and buyer, essentially encouraging sellers to charge well beyond face value. Via ESPN:
The $2,299,998.85 seats for the July 19 match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, are located behind a goal in the lower deck in block 124, row 45, seats 33-36.
It’s unclear whether a fan set that price as a joke or if it was a listing made by a ticket brokerage. But that isn’t the only million-dollar listing that FIFA has allowed on its ticketing platform. Someone even set Category 4 seats for $11.4 million.

Obviously, those tickets would never sell for that price. But FIFA allowing those listings to go live shows how the organization is only looking at the dollar signs for this World Cup. It’s never been about the fans.
