Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is setting the record straight on why she found her new contract with the Fever to be “a little frustrating.”
Cunningham, 29, first discussed her feelings about signing a one-year, $665,000 deal to return to the Fever this season on an episode of her podcast Show Me Something, co-hosted by Bravo star West Wilson.
When Wilson asked the WNBA star if her contract was “better” than she expected “given the changes in structure and money in the last few weeks” as the league signed a new collective bargaining agreement, Cunningham shook her head.
“It’s fine,” she said, explaining, “It’s tough because I came off an injury, and I haven’t been in front of any teams.”

Cunningham told her co-host she “had a lot going on this offseason” (like posing for SI Swimsuitand getting re-baptized on her own “terms”), which didn’t allow her to meet with other teams.
“And I’m not gonna lie, that’s a little frustrating because I’m someone who…I kind of just shoot it straight, like if I wasn’t feeling good or I was hesitant, I think I would’ve said something and been honest because I’m at the point in my career where I just want to win.”
“I just want to win,” Cunningham repeated as she continued explaining, “And so, I’m not going to put my ego and everything in front of things, and I know it is a business, I think I’m just wired a little differently. I just want to win.”
Cunningham also said on her podcast that she feels her contract was “a great wake-up call to not get comfortable” in Indiana. “I think it kind of lit a fire under my a– even more,” and added that she’s “shooting the ball well” and “mentally in a great spot” going into the new WNBA season.
A few hours after Cunningham’s admission that her contract wasn’t what she was hoping for started to make news, the Fever star took to X to clarify that she wasn’t “mad” about her new deal.
“I’m gonna shut this down right now. I’m not mad about the money…. I just wanted more years because I love it here,” she wrote on Monday night.
“I wanted to get a house so I could bring my dog and donkey to Indy with me. That’s it. That’s the truth. I think we have something very special here in Indiana,” Cunningham added.
