On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will get back to work with their next round of organized team activities (OTAs). The team has been on a short break since rookie minicamp but May 18 has been the date circled on our calendars as when the real work gets started.
Here are the four big storylines to track at OTAs.
Howard vs Allar, Round 1
New head coach Mike McCarthy held quarterback Will Howard out of rookie camp so he could focus fully on rookie Drew Allar. Now, it will be Howard vs Allar and every rep these two young quarterbacks will be under the microscope as they fight to be the Steelers quarterback of the future.
Will that other QB show up?
According to multiple reports, Aaron Rodgers is back in Pittsburgh this weekend as he continues to string the Steelers along. Will Rodgers show up on Monday and sign a contract with the team or will he continue to hold out until mandatory activities start.
The offensive line shuffle
The Steelers added multiple offensive linemen this offseason via free agency and the NFL draft. In particular, we want to keep an eye on where returning right tackle Troy Fautanu is playing and if he moves to the left to allow rookie offensive tackle Max Iheanachor to get reps on the right. We also expect a position battle at left guard between rookie Gennings Dunker, free-agent addition Brock Hoffman and returning veteran Spencer Anderson.
Shuffling the secondary
The addition of cornerback Jamel Dean gives the Steelers the best cornerback tandem in the NFL but we want to see how the depth chart works out behind them as well as what the play is at safety, where talent is thin.
