A 19-year-old soccer star required two rounds of emergency surgery following a stabbing incident during the early hours of Sunday morning. Alamara Djabi, who represents the Danish team FC Midtjylland, was attacked in the city of Herning.

Djabi was initially put into an induced coma but has regained consciousness following two operations. The midfielder is now in a stable condition, according to his club.

In a statement, via The Mirror, Midtjylland confirmed: “Alamara Djabi was seriously injured in a stabbing and is now in stable condition after two operations.

“He has woken up from an induced coma and is doing well under the circumstances. FC Midtjylland is in close dialogue and collaboration with the authorities and supports him and his family.

“Out of respect for the police’s ongoing investigation, including witness interviews and investigations, we have no further comments. We ask for the public’s understanding and call for respect for the privacy of Alamara Djabi and his loved ones in this difficult situation.

“Alamara Djabi has not been selected for the first team for a long time and was not in the game for the upcoming matches. Our thoughts are with our teammate, his family and friends, and we wish him continued recovery.”

Danish police have also issued a statement. Officers say they’re seeking a 20-year-old man with pale complexion and cropped dark hair, who is thought to be linked to Sunday’s 3:30 am incident.

Djabi has made a single substitute appearance for Midtjylland this season against KuPS in UEFA Europa League qualifying. The Guinea-Bissau-born player was then included amongst the substitutes for games against Celtic, Roma, Genk, and Dinamo Zagreb in the competition proper.

During the previous season, Djabi had a loan spell with Portuguese second-division side Mafra. He made his Midtjylland debut in the 2023-24 season after progressing through their youth system.

The club are in the midst of a battle for the Superliga crown, having last secured the title in 2024. The four-time Danish champions occupy second place behind Aarhus Gymnastikforening – commonly known as AGF – whom they face in a potentially decisive game on Sunday.

Midtjylland famously defeated Manchester United 2-1 in the Europa League knockout stages in 2016. United ultimately progressed past the Round of 16, as Louis van Gaal’s team won 5-1 in the return leg at Old Trafford in a game which is chiefly recalled for Marcus Rashford scoring twice on his debut.
