⚾Game of the Day
The Hendricken baseball team got off to the start it was looking for against South Kingstown in their Division I Pod 1 winners’ bracket final on Thursday.
And thanks to Jayden Burgos, the Hawks got the ending they were looking for two.
Hendricken, the tournament’s top seed, came out blazing against the fourth-seeded Rebels, but saw a five-run lead disappear to one in the sixth inning. In stepped Burgos, who ended SK’s rally, then pitching himself out of a jam in the seventh to secure the 5-4 win and got the Hawks one win away from the State Championship Series.
Drama didn’t seem likely after the start Hendricken got off to, playing two runs in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Edgar Rodriguez and an RBI double from Mason Crain. The Hawks kept hitting in the second, getting a run on an RBI single from Parker Boyd and scoring another on a passed ball. Hendricken then added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Rodriguez and a win seemed inevitable.
Nobody told South Kingstown. The Rebels took full advantage of a Hendricken miscue that brought two runs home in the fifth. In the sixth, Luke Palmieri made it a two-run game with an sacrifice fly and Michael DiGioia followed with a single that made it 5-4 with runners on the corners.
Burgos took over from there. The junior ended the rally with a lineout to center field and opened the seventh with a popout to second. South Kingstown’s Jack Noonan followed with a double, but Burgos answered with a strikeout. He then walked the next batter and a wild pitch put runners on second and third, but Burgos locked in and got a strikeout to end the game.
Jayden Burgos got the start for Hendricken and picked up the win, throwing five innings of two hit ball with eight strikeouts. His brother got the save. Rodriguez led Hendricken with two RBI and five different players scored the runs for the Hawks.
Hendricken will now wait to see who it will play Sunday. The Hawks will need one win over either No. 5 North Kingstown or No. 4 South Kingstown to make the state final.
The Rebels are set to play No. 5 NK on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Old Mountain Field to earn a rematch with Hendricken.
⚾BASEBALL – D-I Pod 2 Winners’ final
East Providence 9, La Salle 4
Bill Koch’s story on the third-seeded Townies’ win over the second-seeded Rams is coming soon.
⚾BASEBALL – D-I Pod 1 Losers’ semifinal
North Kingstown 1, Moses Brown 0
The Skippers couldn’t do anything against Will Haggerty, but when the Quakers’ defense presented an opportunity they took it and pulled out a 1-0 win.
Both pitchers dominated the game, No. 4 North Kingstown’s Bodie Forsell exchanged zeroes with Haggerty, the ace for No. 9 Moses Brown. Hits were hard to come by, as Forsell gave up fur and Haggerty gave up two.
The lone run was scored in the sixth when Colton Kim drew a leadoff walk and then stole second base. A ground ball hit by Nick Martucci turned into an error and a run and all of a sudden the Skippers had a 1-0 lead.
Forsell made sure it stuck. He struck out the last three batters of the game to finish off his four-hit shutout that saw him walk one and strike out seven. Haggerty took the hard-luck loss, allowing just two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
North Kingstown advances to the losers’ bracket final on Friday and will travel to play No. 4 South Kingstown at Old Mountain Field at 4:30 p.m.
⚾BASEBALL – D-I Pod 2 Losers’ semifinal
Smithfield 6, Lincoln 0
Jackson Chamberlin was overpowering on the mound and his offense wasted no time offering some support as the Sentinels eliminated the Lions under the lights at Chet Nichols Field with a 6-0 win.
No. 7 Smithfield like what it got out of its starter. Chamberlin controlled No. 6 Lincoln through six innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 15. He fanned the side in the first, second and sixth, closing with a 1-2-3 frame. Chamberlin also struck out four batters in the fourth, with the first reaching on a passed ball.
Lincoln’s best chance against Chamberlin came in the third. He hit the first two batters and loaded the bases with a one-out intentional walk. Chamberlin recorded a 1-2 putout on a bunt back to the mound and notched another strikeout to escape the jam.
Smithfield jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to Sam Cicchitelli’s two-run single through the left side and Gavin Gibree’s lined two-run single to center. The Sentinels added two more runs on an infield error in the sixth, but they didn’t wind up needing any more insurance. Domenic Lombardi finished up with a scoreless seventh.
Caden Oldham collected two hits and two walks for the Lions (14-9), who fell into this elimination game thanks to a 2-1 loss against East Providence. Joey Lezon added two hits and Lucas Marshall accounted for the fifth. Gibree closed with two hits for Smithfield (14-10), which will play an elimination game against La Salle next time out.
⚾BASEBALL – D-II Pod 1 Winners’ final
East Greenwich 3, Middletown 1
The Avengers scrapped up some early offense and Anders Nelson made sure it was enough in a 3-0 win over the Islanders, advancing to the Pod 1 championship game.
East Greenwich, the top seed in D-II, loaded the bases in the first inning but only got one run on a double-play ball. A Middletown error gave the Avengers a 2-0 lead in the second and a wild pitch in the fourth made it 3-0.
Nelson made it work. The senior had it going in his six innings of work, giving up four hits while walking four and allowing one run with seven strikeouts. Keyan Zahedi pitched himself into trouble with two outs in the seventh, but got a ground ball out to end the game.
East Greenwich now needs one win to advance to the D-II Championship Series. It will wait for the winner of Friday’s game between No. 4 Middletown and No. 5 Narragansett.
The Islanders got a solid pitching effort from Noah Travers, who gave up four hits, three walks and one earned run in the complete-game loss. Travers also scored the team’s lone run. Middletown will host No. 5 Narragansett on Friday to try and earn a rematch with EG.
⚾BASEBALL – D-II Pod 2 Winners’ final
West Warwick 6, NP 4

⚾BASEBALL – D-II Pod 1 Losers’ semifinal
Narragansett 5, Johnston 1
Finley Hohl spun a gem and the Mariners hit precisely when they needed to in a 5-1 win over the Panthers.
No. 4 Narragansett had confidence in Hohl and the junior showed why, throwing 3 2/3 no-hit innings – retiring 14 of the first 15 batters he faced – before giving up a single he followed with a strikeout. Hohl pitched a complete game, giving up four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.
The Mariners gave Hohl two runs in the in the third on an RBI single by Aidan Clancey and a Johnston error. The Panthers, the No. 8 seed in the tourney, scored an unearned run of their own in the fifth to make it a one-run game, but Narragansett got RBI singles by Jackson Hohl and Jackson DiFillippo to get some breathing room.
Clancey led the Narragansett offense, going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Zayden Kent also had two hits and scored two runs. The Mariners advance to the losers’ bracket final and will travel to play No. 4 Middletown on Friday.
Johnston freshman Aiden Neil had two hits in the season-ending loss.
⚾BASEBALL – D-III Pod 1 Winners’ final
Woonsocket 12, Classical 1
The Villa Novans left no doubt about this one with a seven-run first inning that put the game away before fans could get comfortable with a 12-1 win over the Purple.
Woonsocket – which won last year’s D-III title but declined to move up to D-II – has dominated teams in division play and this matchup was no exception. The Villa Novans got an RBI double from Cesar Vazquez that scored leadoff man Braylon Guilbeault and exploded from there to take a 7-0 lead after the first. They added four more in the second and traded runs with No. 4 Classical before the game ended after the top of the fifth via the 10-run rule.
Vazquez had a big game for the Novans, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Jullian DeJesus finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs and Ty Chhourn scored twice in the win. Woonsocket is one win away from a return to the D-III Championship Series and will take on the winner of Friday’s game between No. 4 Classical and No. 8 North Smithfield.
Classical had two hits. The Journal could not identify the players because the team has not entered numbers on to their official RIIL roster. The Purple will host No. 12 Hope for a chance at a rematch with Woonsocket.
⚾BASEBALL – D-III Pod 2 Winners’ final
BVPCF 3, Scituate 0
Noah Ferreira was untouchable and the Warrior Pride scrapped up enough runs to pull off another upset in the tournament with a 3-0 win over the Spartans.
BVPCF, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, arrived at Manning Field to play No. 3 Scituate and came with confidence after its win over No. 2 Exeter-West Greenwich.
Having Ferreira throwing the way he did only added to it. The senior threw strikes and kept himself out of trouble, allowing three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in his complete-game victory.
The Warrior Pride didn’t manage much against Aiden Ouillette, but they got enough, scrapping up one run in the third, fourth and fifth. Andriel DeJesus drove home two of the runs and Alex Torres scored twice for BVPCF, which moves on to the Pod 2 championship game and will need one win to advance to the D-III final.
Scituate drops to the Pod 2 losers’ bracket final and they’ll play on the road against No. 2 Exeter-West Greenwich on Friday to try and earn a rematch with BVPCF.
⚾BASEBALL – D-III Pod 1 Losers’ semifinal
Hope 11, North Smithfield 4
The Blue Wave crashed their way to 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning, turning around the elimination game against the Northmen for good and scoring a road victory.
Marcos Medrano started for No. 12 Hope and closed the onslaught with a run-scoring single to right and an RBI double to left, as it erased a 4-2 deficit in convincing fashion. Jerry Gamboa’s two-run single to right gave the Blue Wave a 5-4 lead and Bryan Abreu followed with a lined RBI single to left. Jose Montero added a two-run single to left as Hope took complete command.
Nick Tremblay belted a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the third to give North Smithfield – the No. 8 seed in the tourney – a 2-0 lead and Tommy DeCataldo grounded a two-run single to right to make a 4-2 game in the fourth. The Northmen (10-11) were nine outs from advancing to an elimination game with Classical.
The Blue Wave (8-13) had other ideas and will meet their city rivals instead. Josh Tejada battled to a complete-game victory on the mound and Medrano led the way at the plate by closing 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Gamboa added three hits, three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
⚾BASEBALL – D-III Pod 2 Losers’ semifinal
EWG 15, Tiverton 5
The Scarlet Knights were ready to go, putting on an offensive display in the first two innings in their 15-5 win over the Tigers.
Angry after an upset loss to No. 7 BVPCF in the opening round of pod play, No. 2 Exeter-West Greenwich took it out on No. 11 Tiverton. The Scarlet Knights went up 1-0 on a J.J. Langlais single that Dylan Main followed with a three-run home run. EWG put up six runs in the first, then came back with nine runs in the second. The Tigers tried to keep things going, but were stopped short in the top of the fifth.
Main finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and Tyler Medeiros had three RBI and two runs. Langlais, Tyler Main and Logan Sweet scored two runs apiece in the win. EWG will try to keep its season going Friday when it hosts No. 3 Scituate in the Pod 2 losers’ bracket final.
🥎SOFTBALL – D-I Winners’ semifinal
Chariho 7, Westerly 0
Adriana Jeannenot was her All-State self and Ella Alves got the scoring started with a bang in the Chargers 7-0 win over the Bulldogs, earning a spot in Saturday’s winners’ bracket final.
Jeannenot gave up a single to Ella Keegan – who was then caught stealing – and a double to Frankie Arnold to open the game and then decided enough was enough. She gave up another hit in the second, but then took control of the afternoon for No. 2 Chariho. Jeannenot threw all seven innings, allowing the three hits with one walk and she finished with 11 strikeouts.
The game was scoreless through two, but Alves led off the bottom of the third with a home run before the Chargers picked up two more runs. They scored four more over the last two innings, but didn’t need the insurance.
Jeannenot had a big day at the plate as well, going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Maddie Dorgan, Anna Tretton and Alicia Valuk scored two runs apiece in the win. Chariho moves on to Saturday’s winners’ bracket final and will play the winner of Friday’s game between No. 1 La Salle and No. 4 North Kingstown.
Westerly, the sixth seed in the D-I tourney, drops to the losers’ bracket and will play the winner of Friday’s game between No. 9 Prout and No. 5 St. Raphael.
🥎SOFTBALL – D-I losers’ bracket
Cranston West 7, Pilgrim 2
Bree Bedard was at her best with runners on base and the Falcons used to big innings to take down the Patriots, 7-2.
Bedard got off to a rocky start, giving up a run on a Natalie Fratus double in the first inning, but settled in after that. The freshman allowed baserunners, but didn’t let another cross. She threw 5 2/3 innings, spreading out nine hits and two walks while striking out two. Izzy Marcano took over and allowed one hit over the final 1 1/3 innings.
Cranston West, the No. 3 seed that lost to No. 6 Westerly on Wednesday, got going down 1-0 the third. Caroline Nelson led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Marcano. Mia Baffoni followed with an RBI double and she scored on a groundout by Nicole Silvestri to make it 3-1. The Falcons scored four more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Baffoni led the offense with two hits – a double and triple – two runs and one RBI. Emma Regine also drove in two for Cranston West, which will play the loser of Friday’s game between No. 1 La Salle and No. 4 North Kingstown.
Pilgrim out-hit Cranston West in the game, 10-6, with Fratus, Addison Dempsey and Gabriella Santiago getting two hits apiece. The loss ends the season for the Patriots, who graduate one senior in captain Gretchen Dombeck.

Lia Doster owned the circle and the Tigers continued to ravage D-III pitching in a 15-0 win over the Thunderbolts.
Tiverton, the top seed, hasn’t played a full game in D-III this season and the matchup against No. 4 Cranston East was no exception. The Tigers scored two runs in the second and third innings before pouring on 11 in the third, walking off with a win after a bases-loaded walk to Sara Poland that brought the 15-run rule into play.
Doster was in control in the circle, giving up two hits and striking out two in the three innings of work.
Brooke Sowa, Carlie Martin, Emma O’Shea and Poland had two RBI apiece in the win. Tiverton will play in Saturday’s D-III winners’ bracket final at Rhode Island College against the winner of Friday’s game between No. 3 Exeter-West Greenwich and No. 2 Rogers
