The Detroit Tigers‘ woes against the Atlanta Braves continue to mount.
Entering Tuesday’s series-opening contest at Truist Park, the Tigers dropped eight straight to the Braves, one of the MLB’s hottest clubs. Swept the past two seasons, the Tigers scored just 10 runs in their past six matchups.
Before the game’s midway point, the Tigers suffered two more losses.
Starting pitcher Casey Mize exited after fielding a slow-rolling grounder in the third inning and center fielder Javier Baez departed on a cart following an awkward fifth-inning play at first base.
Tigers will need to make player moves
What appeared to be a routine play, Mize ended up exiting Tuesday after throwing out Braves’ Drake Baldwin at first base. Mize initially fielded the slow chopper near the first-base line.
The 1-3 play appeared routine, but the right-hander looked agitated, prompting a get-together with the training staff. The conversation was short. The Titgers’ No. 5 starter left the game with right groin tightness, trailing 1-0.
Could Triple-A Toledo starting pitcher Ty Madden, who started Tuesday, be in line to replace Mize in the rotation?
Baez’s injury was more apparent.
While trying to beat out a grounder to shortstop Mauricio Dubon, Baez pulled up and landed awkwardly on the first-base bag. MLB.com reported the utility player could have injured his right ankle.
The Tigers ended up dropping a 5-2 decision to the Braves on Tuesday, but they could have lost much more.
