Fans and drivers are preparing for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, just days after the sudden death of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch.
Busch, a two-time Cup Series champion, died Thursday at age 41 after a brief illness. His family said Saturday that he died from severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the racing world and is being felt by fans across North Carolina.
At Walt’s Toys and Collectibles along Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, owner Walter Prince said Busch’s popularity has long made his memorabilia difficult to keep in stock — even before his death.
Busch spent more than two decades as one of NASCAR’s most recognizable drivers, building a strong following both on and off the track. He had been expected to compete in this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 before news of his illness and death.

NASCAR star Kyle Busch is being remembered not only for his success on the track, but for his devotion to family and generosity off of it, following his sudden death Thursday at age 41.
Prince, who wore a shirt honoring Busch, said the champion’s personality and dedication helped elevate the sport.
“He was about the sport, and he was all about promoting it,” Prince said. “He was just a super nice guy, always a smile on his face. It was hard to pull against him because he was really just that nice of a guy. And he really carried the sport and helped bring it back to prominence.”
Tributes to Busch have continued to pour in as NASCAR prepares to race without one of its biggest stars.
Busch is survived by his wife and two children.
