Vikings announce death of former 1st round pick, sacks leader

The Minnesota Vikings community and the NFL are in mourning. On Thursday, the Vikings confirmed that former defensive end Doug Martin has passed away at the age of 68, marking the loss of one of the franchise’s most consistent and respected defensive players. Martin, a former first-round pick out of the University of Washington, spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Vikings, an increasingly rare feat that speaks to both his talent and loyalty.

From the moment he arrived in Minnesota, Martin became a cornerstone of the team’s defense, known for his toughness, reliability, and ability to disrupt opposing offenses.

Peak Dominance in 1982

Martin’s standout season came in 1982, when he earned All-Pro honors after leading the league with 11.5 sacks (in just nine games). At a time when defensive play was becoming more aggressive and pass rushers were gaining prominence, Martin established himself as one of the most feared edge defenders in the game.

By the time his career came to a close, Martin had compiled 61.5 sacks, a total that still ranks fourth all-time in Vikings history. It’s a testament not only to his peak performance but also to his consistency over a decade of high-level play. In a franchise filled with defensive greats, Martin carved out a legacy that continues to stand the test of time.
