The latest wave of speculation began after Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma made a brief but intriguing comment during a podcast appearance, hinting that conversations regarding a possible comeback may already be taking place.
Kohli had announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, bringing down the curtain on a glittering red-ball career that lasted nearly 14 years. Since then, Indian cricket fans have repeatedly urged the former captain to reconsider his decision, believing he still has unfinished business in whites.
Now, Sharma’s latest remark has reignited those hopes.
“Many people have told me to ask Virat to return to Test cricket because he listens to you,” Sharma said during a podcast teaser for Express Cafe.
But it was his response to a direct question on whether he had personally discussed a comeback with Kohli that truly grabbed attention.
“We are talking about it; let’s see what happens,” he said with a smile.
Fans excited after coach’s comment
The clip quickly went viral across social media platforms, with fans interpreting Sharma’s words as a possible indication that Kohli could still be open to a dramatic Test U-turn in the future.
While there has been no official statement from Kohli himself, the mere suggestion that discussions are happening was enough to trigger widespread excitement.
For many supporters, Kohli’s retirement still feels premature given his influence on India’s Test setup, both as a batter and as captain.
Kohli’s remarkable Test legacy
Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies in June 2011 and went on to become one of the defining players of his generation.
Across 123 Test matches, he amassed 9,230 runs to finish as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in the format.
His leadership era between 2014 and 2022 also transformed India into a formidable overseas Test side. Kohli captained India in 68 Tests and remains the country’s most successful captain in the format with 40 wins.
