With the 2026 Texas high school baseball and softball seasons ramping up statewide, the Big Country’s top high school athletes shined across the Lone Star State last week.
Several athletes had standout performances during last week’s action and have been nominated for this week’s edition of the Abilene Reporter-News’ City National Bank High School Athlete of the Week.
The Reporter-News is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the City National Bank Athlete of the Week at the beginning of each week.
Please include statistics from the week’s games and any pertinent information or honors.
Students in all varsity sports are eligible and can only be named Athlete of the Week one time per season, per sport, and athletes from one school cannot win more than three consecutive weeks.
The poll will close at 5 p.m. Friday and the winner will be announced shortly afterward.
Nominations are due by 7 p.m. Saturday and can be submitted through email at sports@reporternews.com or Andrew.McCulloch@reporternews.com.

Reagan Barr, Eula girls track and field
Barr earned first-place finishes in both the long jump (16-9) and triple jump (36-10.25) at the Region II-1A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet in Abilene. She also punched her ticket to the UIL State Meet in the 4×200-meter relay after a third-place finish for the Lady Pirates at the regional meet.
Blake Britting, Albany baseball
Britting shined at the plate during the Lions bi-district round sweep of De Leon in the 2A DII UIL Baseball Playoffs, recording six RBIs, a run scored, a walk and two stolen bases on 6-for-9 hitting.
Gabby Cabrera, Tuscola Jim Ned softball
Cabrera went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored and a pair of doubles to lead the Lady Indians to an 11-1 win over Bowie in the area round of the 3A DI UIL Softball Playoffs.
Clay Chapman, Albany baseball
Chapman clobbered De Leon in Albany’s bi-district round sweep in the 2A DII UIL Baseball Playoffs last week, going 6-for-8 at the plate with four runs scored, three RBIs, two triples, a double, three stolen bases and a walk.
Gavin Colley, Abilene High baseball
Colley led the Eagles to victory on the mound in Game 2 of their bi-district round series against Lubbock Monterey, hurling seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, two hits and no walks allowed.
Brandt Cox, Ira baseball
Cox’s performance on the mound helped the Bulldogs seize a 9-0 victory over Roby in their bi-district round one-game playoff in the 1A UIL Baseball Playoffs, hurling seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts, two walks and one hit allowed.
Rebekah Cunningham, Haskell softball
Cunningham shined at the plate during the Maidens’ dominant area round sweep of Christoval in the 2A DII UIL Softball Playoffs, racking up four RBIs, four runs scored, two doubles, a triple, a home run, two walks and a stolen base on 4-for-7 hitting.
Davis Etheredge, Roscoe Highland girls track and field
Etheredge earned a pair of gold medals at the Region II-1A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet in Abilene, winning the high jump (5-03.00) and helping the Lady Hornets win a regional title in the 4×400-meter relay (4:12.27) too.
Avie Faries, Abilene Wylie softball
Faries was lights out in the circle during the Lady Bulldogs’ area round sweep of El Paso Del Valle in the 5A DII UIL Softball Playoffs, tallying 14 strikeouts, 11 hits, one walk and two earned runs allowed through 15 innings pitched.
George Ferguson, Abilene High baseball
Ferguson pitched a gem in Game 1 of Abilene High’s bi-district round series against Lubbock Monterey in the 5A DI UIL Baseball Playoffs, tossing a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts, two hits and no walks allowed.
Gehrig Fletcher, Abilene Wylie baseball
Fletcher shined on the mound in Game 1 of the Bulldogs’ bi-district round series against Lubbock Coronado, tossing a complete game no-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks allowed through seven scoreless innings pitched.
Sydnee Gomez, Snyder softball
Gomez pitched almost every inning of the Lady Tigers’ area round series against Burkburnett in the 4A DII UIL Softball Playoffs, recording 23 strikeouts, 16 hits, seven walks and eight earned runs allowed in the circle through three games and 18 innings pitched. She also went 5-for-9 at the plate with three RBIs, three doubles and a triple.
Victoria Guerrero, Coleman girls track and field
Guerrero broke three school records and punched her ticket to the UIL State Meet by breaking her own school record in the 3,200 (11:48) with a second-place finish, helping Coleman’s relay team break its own school record twice in the 4×400-meter relay (4:01.80) for another second-place finish. She also won a gold medal in the 1,600-meter run (5:11).
Alicia Gutierrez, Abilene High softball
Gutierrez was dialed in at the plate and played a big part in helping Abilene High beat El Paso Americas to punch its ticket to the regional semifinals of the 5A DI UIL Softball Playoffs. She racked up five RBIs, four doubles, a home run, a run scored and a walk on 6-for-9 hitting during the Lady Eagles’ three-game area round series.
Delilah Flores, Hermleigh softball
Flores led the Lady Cardinals to an 11-1 win over Eula in the area round of the 1A UIL Softball Playoffs with a strong performance in the circle, tallying three strikeouts, three hits, five walks and one earned run allowed in five innings pitched. She also added two RBIs offensively on 1-for-3 hitting.
Addie Hart, Coahoma softball
Hart clobbered a seventh-inning home run that helped Coahoma secure a 5-1 victory over Coleman in the area round of the 3A DII UIL Softball Playoffs, tallying two runs scored, an RBI, two walks, a home run and three stolen bases on 1-for-2 hitting.
Brayden Jimenez, Stamford baseball
Jimenez smacked a go-ahead, three-run home run that helped the Bulldogs rally to beat Coleman 7-4 in a pivotal Game 3 of their best-of-three bi-district series in the 2A DII UIL Baseball Playoffs.
Camden Lummus, Roby boys track and field
Lummus claimed a pair of regional titles and smashed a couple of school records at the Region II-1A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet at Abilene Christian, winning both the 1,600 meters (4:30.12) and the 3,200 meters (9:51.21).
Kenzie McLean, Cross Plains softball
McLean was virtually unhittable in the circle during the Lady Buffs’ area round series against Westbrook in the 1A UIL Softball Playoffs, registering 29 strikeouts, one hit, one walk and two unearned runs allowed through 12 innings pitched. She also tallied four runs scored, an RBI, a home run, five walks and a stolen base on 3-for-4 hitting.
Jesse Nieto, Hawley baseball
Nieto was locked in offensively during Hawley’s bi-district round sweep of Bangs in the 2A DI UIL Baseball Playoffs, recording eight RBIs, two runs scored, a pair of doubles and a sac fly on 4-for-8 hitting. He also led the Bearcats to a Game 1 victory on the mound after throwing six shutout innings with two strikeouts, three hits and three walks allowed.
Kaison Nunez, Strawn boys track and field
Nunez won the 800-meter run (46.85 seconds) at the Region II-1A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet in Abilene, and also helped Strawn’s relay team finish in second place in the 4×100-meter relay.
AJ Pevey, Cisco softball
Pevey powered the Lady Loboes past Forsan in the area round of the 2A DI UIL Softball Playoffs by racking up six runs scored, two RBIs, a double, a triple, a home run, a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base on 6-for-10 hitting.
Kaya Phillips, Brownwood girls track and field
Phillips earned a first-place finish in the 200 (23.99 seconds) at the Region I-4A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet in Lubbock, and also helped the Lady Lions’ relay teams win both the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relays as well as the Region I-4A girls team regional championship.
Jackson Poole, Clyde baseball
Wilson locked up a pivotal Game 1 victory for Clyde on the mound in its best-of-three bi-district round series against Llano in the 3A DI UIL Baseball Playoffs, tossing seven shutout innings with 11 strikeouts, two hits and three walks allowed.
Stryker Reed, Gordon boys track and field
Reed took home five gold medals from the Region II-1A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet after capturing individual regional titles in the pole vault (14-06), the high jump (6-03), the 110-meter hurdles (14.32) and the 300-meter hurdles (37.57), in addition to helping Gordon’s 4×400-meter relay team also capture a first-place finish (3:22.14).
Ry Reed, Gordon boys track and field
Reed also took a lot of hardware from the Region II-1A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet in Abilene, earning four gold medals in the 100-meter dash (10.66) and long jump (21-06.50), and as part of Gordon’s 4×200-meter relay (1:29.31) and 4×400-meter relay (3:22.14) teams.
Blakely Rodgers, Coahoma softball
Rodgers belted a seventh-inning home run that helped the Bulldogettes defeat Coleman 5-1 in a one-game playoff in the area round of the 3A DII UIL Softball Playoffs.
Halle Rust, Stephenville girls track and field
Rust set Stephenville’s school records in both the 1,600-meter run (5:14.15) and the 3,200-meter run (11:28.38) at the Region I-4A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet in Lubbock.
Ethan Schindler, Stephenville baseball
Schindler tallied five RBIs, a run scored, two doubles and two walks on 5-for-10 hitting to help the Yellow Jackets beat Lubbock Estacado in the bi-district round of the 4A DI UIL Baseball Playoffs. He also led Stephenville to a Game 1 win on the mound after nearly throwing a complete game, registering six strikeouts, five hits, two walks and zero earned runs allowed in 6⅔ innings pitched.
Ellie Shea, Early girls track and field
Shea took home a gold medal in the discus at the Region I-3A UIL Regional Track and Field Meet in Abilene after logging a throw of 131-7 to capture the regional title.
Colby Walker, Coahoma baseball
Walker was electric in Game 1 of the Bulldogs’ bi-district series versus Alpine in the 3A DII UIL Baseball Playoffs, striking out 13 while allowing only two hits and three walks through seven shutout innings on the mound.
Luke White, Hamlin baseball
White helped Hamlin sweep Cross Plains in the bi-district round of the 1A UIL Baseball Playoffs after going 4-for-5 at the plate with seven runs scored, four RBIs, five stolen bases, three walks and a hit-by-pitch.
