Vote for the Freep Buffalo Wild Wings Boys Prep Athlete of the Week

It’s time to vote for the Detroit Free Press Buffalo Wild Wings Boys Prep Athlete of the Week.

This week’s poll features four athletes –three baseball players and one from track and field – who had standout performances during the week of May 24-30.

Voting will close at noon on Friday, June 5.

Here are the nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):

Collin Finn, Warren Cousino, baseball

Finn contributed to Cousino’s three games last week, including a 10-4 victory over Berkley on May 29, in Cousino’s first district title in 13 years. Finn went 9-for-10 for the week and had four RBIs and five stolen bases. In the district final, he pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits with five strikeouts.

Will Frost, Trenton, baseball

Trenton captured its third consecutive district title after picking up wins against Grosse Ile and Riverview. Frost, the Trojans’ first baseman and pitcher, dominated from the mound in the district semifinals game on May 30, where he pitched a complete game, with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed.

Vernall Lee, Detroit King, track and field

Vernall Lee made school history when he became the first runner from Detroit King to win the 100-meter state championship during the MHSAA Division 1 track and field state finals on May 30. The sophomore runner finished with a time of 10.76 seconds. Lee, who also plays football for the Crusaders, broke his ankle in the fall and wasn’t sure if he’d compete after the injury.

Rino Watters, Rochester Adams, baseball

The Central Michigan football commit helped lead Adams to a 7-6 victory over Rochester after being down five runs Friday in the district championship game. Watters provided relief to pitchers Akhil Pilla and Kent Lutzka and threw over 100 pitches in five innings. He had four strikeouts and finished with a 1.24 ERA.

This week’s nominations include reporting from Jared Ramsey.
