The playoffs have arrived!
Everything this season has led to this and we’re excited for the postseason run. The tournaments start on Tuesday and finish on June 6 at Rhode Island College.
This is the last athlete of the week poll, but we will have more recognition to hand out after the playoffs. Get your votes in for this week’s poll now!
Who won last week’s ballot?
North Providence’s Caden Hicks ran away with last week’s ballow with 62.05% of the votes. The Cougars had a big win over Mt. Hope and Hicks was rewarded for his efforts in the victory.
Congrats to everyone that was on the ballot last week!
What does the Longplex Athlete of the Week receive?
Winners will be announced in the following Athlete of the Week poll. But the ballot is really for bragging rights and for the volleyball community to rally around its athletes.
Everyone that made the ballot did something spectacular and deserved recognition. Winning just provides a bit more limelight to an individual performance that could help a team play for real hardware in June.
How does a player get nominated?
Have a day on the court. Shine with your play and show why you warranted recognition for an outstanding week of volleyball.
But that’s only the first part. Coaches have been asked to submit results to the Providence Journal before 10 p.m. on the day of the game. That part is crucial – we can’t do this alone and rely on the coaches. Coaches, please send results to pjsports@providencejournal.com and we can take it from there.
Voting closes on Friday at 11:59 p.m. Voting must be done via the ballot below — email submissions will not be accepted.
Now it is time for this week’s nominees!
Desmond Butler, Exeter-West Greenwich
Butler helped EWG grab the No. 3 seed in Division III with a pair of wins last week. On Monday in a five-set victory against Burrillville, the sophomore had 22 digs and five kills. EWG then beat St. Raphael on Wednesday.
Cameron McVeigh, St. Raphael
McVeigh started the week off right as he supplied two kills, seven aces, nine digs and two blocks in a sweep of Mount Pleasant on Monday. He then added seven kills and nine digs in a victory vs. Block Island on Wednesday.
Sean Peters, North Kingstown
The Skippers are peaking at the right time and that could be a problem for everyone in D-I. Peters starred for NK over its three wins last week including a 10-kill and two-block performance in a five-set victory over East Providence on Tuesday. He then had 16 kills in a 3-1 finish against Chariho just 24 hours later. The senior finished off the week with a dozen kills as NK swept La Salle in the regular-season finale.
Dylan Shaw, Mt. Hope
Shaw helped the D-III defending champions finish with the top seed in the league again this season. The senior amassed 15 kills, two blocks and 11 digs in a sweep of Davies on Monday. And in a rematch of last year’s title game against Portsmouth on Wednesday, Shaw added 17 kills, three aces and 13 digs.
Milo Sy, East Greenwich
The Avengers are a trendy pick to make a run in Division I. EG’s playoff journey begins at Cranston East as the Avengers snagged the sixth seed in the tournament. Sy registered 18 kills in East Greenwich’s big 3-1 victory over Barrington on Monday last week.
