While many NBA fans had no hope of the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers‘ first game coming anywhere close to the Western Conference’s opening game of the Conference Finals, the East’s game did also need an additional period to determine a winner.
It certainly took a while for the Knicks to wake up, and they even trailed by as many as 22 points with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter. However, Jalen Brunson proved yet again why he is one of the league’s most clutch players. The star guard scored 15 points (7/9 FG), including 11 straight, in the fourth quarter to drag New York back into the game and stand the team’s home crowd back to their feet.
While the Cavaliers did give up the lead as a team, many NBA fans were quick to notice how involved James Harden was in New York’s comeback. The Knicks frequently ran isolation plays to get Brunson on Harden at the top of the arc, and he repeatedly got past him to the hoop. The 36-year-old’s best days are certainly behind him, but his frequent turnovers and inability to play defense in Game 1 largely held his team back from an otherwise great game.
New York’s bench has been a slept-on feature of their team. In 17 minutes in Game 1, Landry Shamet accumulated nine points on 3/4 from beyond the arc, including the game-tying 3P with 45 seconds left, and finished the game with a +25 plus-minus score.
Donovan Mitchell has shown repeatedly that he plays great in Madison Square Garden, and he did finish Tuesday’s opener with 29 points (12/23 FG), five rebounds, and six steals. However, as the leader of this Cavs team, an onus does fall onto him for only three points total during the fourth quarter and overtime.
