‘When he’s not there, we miss him’ – Spain coach drops major hint over Barcelona midfielder’s World Cup chances

With the countdown continuing towards Spain’s official World Cup squad announcement, national team coach Luis de la Fuente has opened up on several important selection matters, including the situation involving Gavi and his return to the international setup.

The Spain manager spoke during a recent interview, relayed by AS, where he discussed possible surprises in the final travelling squad.

He also opened up about the goalkeeping situation, and the growing importance of the Barcelona midfielder following his difficult injury period.

Plans for the World Cup

While discussing potential new faces in the squad, De la Fuente confirmed that Spain are planning to travel with 26 players for the tournament.

“It’s possible. Our plan is to call up 26 players, and then if we need a specific type of player, they’ll join us. But the roster will consist of 26 players.”

The Spanish manager also addressed the goalkeeping department, an area where several names have been battling for limited spots, including Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

When asked whether Spain could take more than three goalkeepers, the coach made his position very clear.

“Three. I’d love to be able to take the five or six who’ve been with us, but the three we’re taking are exceptional goalkeepers.”

On Gavi’s chances

However, the biggest attention naturally arrived when De la Fuente was questioned about Gavi and his return to form after months away from football.

The young midfielder spent a significant part of the season recovering from serious physical setbacks, but his performances since returning to action in March appear to have convinced the Spanish coaching staff.

The Spain coach strongly defended the midfielder’s inclusion and made it clear that the Barcelona star has fully earned his opportunity.

“We haven’t given Gavi anything for free. He’s earned it. After two very long injuries and a huge effort, life is rewarding him.

“He’s in great form right now, with plenty of energy as always.

“We went through a very tough time with his first injury, and that made us realise that when he’s not there, we really miss him,” he concluded.
