Who is Drew Fischer? The referee for Argentina vs Cape Verde

The round of 16 awaits for the winners of Argentina vs Cape Verde.

World champions Argentina are, naturally, heavy favourites to go through in what looks to be the biggest mismatch in this round of the competition.

But Cape Verde have already shown great determination and character to make it this far after claiming draws against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in the group stage to make it this far.

Lionel Messi is practically playing in his back yard at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida for this one.

Keeping the tournament’s all-time top scorer quiet is sure to be a big ask for Cape Verde, who will just be hoping they don’t have any bad officiating against them just to compound matters.

Messi will already be familiar with the referee FIFA have appointed for this game, too.

Canadian Drew Fischer has been picked to run around, whistle in hand, having carved out a reputation as one of MLS’ top officials.

The 45-year-old William H. Macy-alike took charge of last year’s MLS Cup final, and was involved at the 2022 World Cup as a VAR.

This is Fischer’s third game of the tournament, having previously overseen France’s 3-0 win over Iraq and Croatia’s 2-1 win over Ghana in the group stage, awarding Ghana’s goal after a long pitchside review in the latter game.

Waving their flags are the side of the pitch are two more of Canada’s finest, Micheal Barwegen and Lyes Arfa.

Mexico’s Katia Garcia will serve as the fourth official, with her compatriot Sandra Ramirez acting as the reserve official on the sidelines.

Leading the VAR booth is American Armando Villarreal.

Alongside him are Croatia’s Ivan Bebek and Nicaragua’s Tatiana Guzman.
