Group D will wrap up with a pair of games on Thursday night – and one of them is much more consequential than the other.
While Paraguay and Australia are slugging it out in a battle to finish second and avoid waiting to see how the third-place table shakes out, co-hosts the United States of America will take on Turkiye in a game with absolutely nothing on the line.
That’s because the Americans are already guaranteed to top their group, while Turkiye have no hope of climbing off the bottom of the table even with a win.

Referee, linesmen and VAR for Turkiye vs USA
But hey: that doesn’t mean we can’t have a good time – and for the officials, it is a chance to impress the assessors as we go into the knockout stage. Try watching the game through that lens, it might be fun! (It wouldn’t be fun.)
The game will take place at SoFi Stadium in the Los Angeles area, with kick-off set for 7pm local time (3am UK time).
Taking charge of the game is Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal, who is at his second World Cup having also officiated in 2022.
You will almost certainly not remember the 40 year old from his sole previous outing at this tournament, which came in Scotland’s uneventful 1-0 win over Haiti in the first set of group fixtures.
Ghorbal is one of Africa’s top referees, twice taking charge of the CAF Champions League final as well as handling games at last summer’s Club World Cup.
Assisting him as linesmen are compatriots Mokrane Gourari and Abbes Akram Zehrouni.
Omar Al Ali is the fourth official, with fellow Emirati Mohamed Al-Hammadi on hand as the reserve official.
The VAR officials for this game are yet to be confirmed.
