PAWTUCKET – After losing last year’s Division II Boys Tennis Championship, Prout showed up to Slater Park determined to get itself a title.
The Crusaders are going to have to wait for it.
Prout led North Smithfield in Sunday’s D-II final, 2-1, with two matches seemingly headed in their direction when Mother Nature decided to spoil the whole thing, with a rainstorm postponing the match until Monday.
With a men’s league scheduled to take place at Slater Park on Monday, the two teams will now finish their match at East Providence High School at 4:30 p.m., with the Division III match between top-seeded Warwick and No. 3 Providence Country Day set to follow.
The 2026 RIIL Tennis Championships were originally scheduled for Saturday, but rain wiped out the entire day of play and pushed the matches to Sunday. The State Championship opened play, and East Greenwich’s 4-1 win over Barrington ran long, forcing a delay in play for Division II.
Prout didn’t seem to mind. The Crusaders got rolling with a win at No. 4 singles by Lawson Graybill, which was soon followed by a victory from Nico Testa at No. 1 singles. North Smithfield picked up a victory from Ben Cuddy and Alex Sevegny at No. 3 doubles to cut the deficit in half.
Prout led in three matches when play was stopped. Luke Cavanagh was on top 6-4, 5-3 at No. 2 and the No. 1 doubles team of Wilson Babij and Brady Kopka was up 6-4, 5-4. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Jack Paiva and Alex Demos came back to take a 2-6, 6-1, 3-1 lead.
North Smithfield was ahead in the other match, as No. 3 Oliver Drolet won his first set 7-5 but trailed 4-3 in the second.
