The Indiana Fever ruled superstar guard Caitlin Clark out for Wednesday night’s home game against the Portland Fire at the last minute with a back injury.
It’s a huge surprise, as Clark has seemingly been healthy so far in the 2026 season and hasn’t needed to miss any time so far. Why is Clark not playing?
Well, according to Fieldhouse Files reporter Scott Agness, Clark missing Wednesday night’s game is “part of a strategic management plan for the season.”
Clark left the team’s season opener earlier in the month a few times to get back adjustments, but she was never considered hurt before Wednesday’s injury report. However, Agness reports that it’s all part of the team’s plan to manage Clark’s minutes as she gets back into playing shape after missing most of the 2025 season.

Fever guard Caitlin Clark will NOT play tonight vs Portland Fire. I’m told it’s part of a strategic management plan for the season.
Tonight is the Fever’s fourth game in eight days.

The Fever play again on Friday night at home against the Golden State Valkyries, so perhaps the team is just saving Clark for that contest. Even then, it’s a huge bummer for those expecting to see Clark on Wednesday night.
How many games did Clark play in 2025?
She only played in 13 games for the Fever last season. She’s played in all four of the team’s 2026 games.
