Wings coach alarmingly calls out team 3 games in: ‘Selfishness in this locker room’

Look, I’m not a WNBA coach or anything. But if I was? I think it would seem to be a weird thing for me to publicly call out my team three games into the season and talk about “selfishness” within the squad, especially when there are new additions getting acclimated.

But maybe Jose Fernandez has something specific in mind, because that’s what the Dallas Wings head coach did on Thursday night.

“It’s real talk and it’s accountability,” he told reporters after the Wings’ 90-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx. “That’s what I told them. I know there’s selfishness in this locker room. There is.”

“You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable on how you played. And don’t get upset if you think that you should have played more, or you didn’t play enough, or you didn’t get the shots that you think you should have gotten,” he added. “Really good teams, they don’t give a [expletive] about that. Know what they give a [expletive] about? Give a [expletive] about winning, because that’s what matters.”

WHEW. That’s a lot. He’s not naming names, but this will either tick someone off or motivate someone. You hope!

Who is Jose Fernandez?

The Wings coach was the bench boss for South Florida’s women’s team for 25 seasons — which included miltiple NCAA Tournament bids — before Dallas hired him in 2025.
