🥎Game of the Day

Softball playoffs won’t start for a couple more days, but Lincoln showed it’s more than ready for the postseason.

The Lions knew Ponaganset was better than it records shows and when adversity struck, they managed to strike back. The Chieftains added some drama to an intense pitchers’ duel with a seventh-inning home run that sent the game to extra innings, but Lincoln came through in the eighth as Annika Sampson’s double brought home what proved to be the winning run in the Lions’ 2-1 victory over the Chieftains.

Lincoln got out to a 1-0 lead after Chloe Landry reached on a one-out double, moved to third on an error and scored on another misplayed ball.

The pitchers were stars of the show after that. For the first four innings, Lincoln’s Molly Ganim dueled with Ponaganset’s Mattea Mello. The Lions then handed the ball to Kayleigh Gouchie, who also traded zeroes with Mello.

Lincoln had a no-hitter going through six innings before Claire Barrett ended it with a solo home run to open the bottom of the seventh. Gouchie rebounded to strike out the next three batters, sending the game to extras.

Landry opened the eighth with a single, then showed off her speed scoring on a double by Sampson. Mello made sure no more runs crossed, but Gouchie did the same in the bottom half to close out the win.

Ganim threw four perfect innings with seven strikeouts and Gouchie gave up one hit, one walk and struck out eight in her four innings of work. Landry led the offense going 3-for-3 while scoring the two runs.

Mello was spectacular in defeat, spreading six hits and three walks over eight innings and finishing with 13 strikeouts.

Lincoln finishes the regular season with a 17-1 record and will be the No. 1 seed in the Division II playoffs. Ponaganset is 8-13 on the season and its official seeding isn’t known; school officials hadn’t entered the results of its May 18 game against Scituate into the RIIL standings. The Chieftains were listed as the No. 7 seed, but trailed Barrington by .89 points for sixth.

🎾BOYS TENNIS – Division II Quarterfinals

Narragansett 4, St. Raphael 0

The defending Division II champs started their run for a second straight title with an impressive performance, sweeping the Boondock Saints, 4-0.

Narragansett got a commanding performance from its doubles lineup, which dropped a total of four games. The No. 2 team of Evan Boze and Aaron Perrone and No. 3 team of Will Hunter and Dylan Nollsch both won by 6-0, 6-1 scores and the No. 1 team of Myles Harding and Rocco Lombardi won 6-0, 6-2.

No. 1 Ethan Smith earned the singles win, with a 6-3, 6-3 victory that ended the season for St. Raphael, which co-opted with Ponaganset this spring.

The Mariners move on to the semifinals and will take on No. 4 North Smithfield at Sprague Park next week.

North Smithfield 4, Classical 1

The drama was slowly building, but Oliver Drolet made sure it never came to a head, finishing off his match at No. 3 singles to give the Northmen a 4-1 win over the Purple.

North Smithfield, the No. 4 seed, picked up three quick points with wins by the No. 3 doubles team of Ben Cuddy and Alex Sevegney (6-1, 6-0) and the No. 2 team of Chase Nelson and Ben Wallbillich (6-1, 6-1) before Classical’s No. 2 team of Noah Masri and Kai Sobata-Walden grabbed a 6-4, 6-4 win. Bryce Santos soon followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 to give the Northmen a 3-1 lead.

The Purple were gaining momentum as it looked ready to earn a pont at No. 2 singles and the match at No. 1 leaning toward a third set, but Drolet came to the rescue for the Northmen.

Drolet dropped a tough first set but came back in heroic fashion to force a third with a tiebreaker win in the second. The third set with Classical’s Peter Breen was a playoff classic, but Drolet made more shots to come out with the 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4 victory.

North Smithfield moves on to the Division II semifinals and will travel to play defending champ Narragansett next week.

🎾BOYS TENNIS – Division III Quarterfinals

Warwick 4, Coventry 0

The No. 1 seed showed why it earned the honor, as Warwick dominated and picked up an easy 4-0 win over the Oakers in their quarterfinal match.

Warwick went undefeated this spring and wasn’t about to have its first loss come in the first round of the playoffs. Warwick won the first set in all six matches, then had a race to see who would score the four points needed to make things official.

The first two points came nearly at the same time, as No. 2 Cornelius Zmed finished off his 6-0, 6-2 win in the same breath as No. 3 Griffin Weldy’s 6-0, 6-1 win. Not long after, Etienne Degos and Ryan DeSilva finished off their 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles for a commanding 3-0 lead.

Warwick was comfortably ahead at Nos. 1 and 4 singles and No. 3 doubles started warming up as the No. 1 team of Christian Mainelli and Alex Marsis clinched the final point.

The win sends Warwick to the semifinal round and it will host the winner of Thursday’s match between No. 5 Cranston East and No. 4 Scituate next week.

Classical closes regular season at 13-6 and sit as the No. 4 ranked team in D-III.

🥎SOFTBALL – Division I

La Salle 10, Pilgrim 0

Hailey Vigneau dominated from the circle and Hailey Stinson got the offense going in the second inning in the Rams’ 10-0 win over the Patriots.

Vigneau set the tone from the circle, throwing five innings of three-hit ball and by the time her day was done, La Salle had confidently put things away.

Stinson, a freshman, came up with the big hit in the second inning, ripping a bases-loaded double that keyed a four-run inning. The Rams scored three runs in the next two innings and three runs in the sixth brought the 10-run rule into play.

It was a productive day for Samantha Sell and Sophia Morgan, both of whom went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Ella DaPonte finished 3-for-4 with one run and Erin Moran was 3-for-3 with one RBI. Stinson led the Rams with four RBI.

La Salle wraps up the regular season with a 19-2 record and will be the No. 1 seed for the Division I playoffs. Pilgrim closes the year 7-12 and is seeded 10th for the postseason.

Chariho 14, Cumberland 0

Adriana Jeannenot did what she’s done all season, leading the Chargers offense and from the circle in a 14-0 win over the Clippers.

Jeannenot made an impact in her first at bat, ripping an RBI double to open scoring as part of a two-run first inning. Chariho continued to hit, getting one run in the second, six in the third and five in the fourth.

The extra support wasn’t needed. Jeannenot, an All-State pitcher, threw four perfect innings and struck out nine batters. She also finished 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs at the plate.

Kaelyn Comerford was equally productive with two hits and three RBI and Anna Tretton had two RBI and two runs. Nicole Raymond scored three times for the Chargers and Alana Valuk and Norah Downing both scored two runs.

The game was part of a day-night doubleheader for Cumberland, which fell to 3-18 after this game and played Westerly afterward. Chariho moved to 20-0 on the season and will be the No. 2 seed for the Division I playoffs despite two convincing wins over top-seeded La Salle.

Westerly 13, Cumberland 3

The top of the Bulldogs’ order hammered the Clippers in a 13-3 win.

Westerly took the bats on a road trip north and went to work. Ella Keegan opened the game with a single and stole second, then scored on Frankie Arnold’s single. A fielder’s choice brough in a second run and Bella Mazzarese added to it with an RBI single of her own. The Bulldogs scored two in the second and three in the fourth, then closed the final two innings with five more runs.

All-Stater Addison Poole did some damage from the three spot, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Keegan finished 3-for-5 with three runs and Arnold went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Dacia Gingeralla, the cleanup hitter, went 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Mazzarese drove in two in the win.

Mia DeMartino led Cumberland, going 1-for-2 with two walks, one RBI and one run.

Westerly wraps up the regular season 13-6 and should be the sixth seed in the D-I playoffs. Cumberland, which played Chariho earlier in the day, ends the season 3-19 and out of the playoffs.

🥎SOFTBALL – Division II

Mt. Hope 18, Woonsocket 7

Rachel Castigliego and the Huskies ended their season on a high note as the offense dominated in an 18-7 win over the Villa Novans.

Down 1-0 after the top of the first, Mt. Hope came back with five runs thanks to Woonsocket errors and an RBI single from Sofia Haberman. The Villa Novans slowly mustered a comeback and were down 7-6 when the Huskies exploded with 11 runs over the final two innings.

Castigliego had a huge day, driving in four runs while scoring twice. The seniors showed up big in their final appearance for Mt. Hope, as Haberman went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI, Lily DaSilveira went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI and Hailey Ferreira finished 2-for-5 with two runs.

Tayla Simas also helped the cause, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Mt. Hope ends the season with a 3-13 record.

Kaylin Krampert helped Woonsocket out, going 2-for-4 with two runs and Cassidy Gaynor finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run. The Villa Novans close the season 1-14.

East Greenwich 12, Barrington 11

Eric Rueb’s story from the Avengers’ unique win over the Eagles is coming soon.

🥎SOFTBALL – Division III

Tiverton 16, Narragansett 0

Two big innings did the job for the Tigers in a 16-0 win over the Mariners.

Tiverton wasted little time in showing everyone where the game was going to go, putting up seven runs before Narragansett could grab a bat. After a scoreless second, the Tigers put up nine runs and the game ended after the third via the 15-run rule.

Lia Doster and Brooke Sowa both scored three times and had two RBI for the Tigers. Lilliana Luis drove in three runs and scored once in the win. Tiverton finishes the regular season 18-2 and is the top seed in the Division III playoffs.

Ava Repucci had the lone hit for Narragansett, which ends the regular season 3-14 and out of the playoff race.

🥍BOYS LACROSSE – Division I

La Salle 9, Bishop Freehan 8

The Rams edged the Shamrocks in this intrastate clash, as La Salle closes the regular season at 12-3.

Nick Loo led all scorers with four goals and two assists, Quincy Marino added a goal and three assists, and four more Rams found the net in this close contest. Dylan Fitzgerald was 13-for-21 in faceoffs and Connor Kelley made nine saves in the win.

La Salle ends the regular season with a 12-3 record and will be the No. 1 seed for the Division I playoffs.

North Kingstown 10, South Kingstown 8

The Skippers controlled the pace from the opening faceoff and held off a late Rebels comeback attempt. NK led 4-0 after the first quarter and 7-0 at halftime before SK battled back to cut the deficit to 8-4 after three quarters.

For North, Xander Veins scored four goals, Barrett Bedford and Jagger Veins each added two, and Connor Leach and Lawson Bedford chipped in one apiece.

Blake Riley led South with a six-goal performance, while Hampton Hubbard and BenHannigan each added a goal in the loss.

Although South Kingstown’s season comes to an end, the Rebels close out the year with a rare milestone, featuring three players with over 100 career goals — seniors Riley, Hubbard, and Mason Thorn.

North Kingstown is set to face Division II Prout in the regular-season finale on Friday but should finish as the No. 5 seed in D-I regardless of the outcome.

🥍BOYS LACROSSE – Division II

Portsmouth 11, Mt. Hope 7

The Patriots trailed late in the second quarter, but Teddy Gersen’s goal gave them momentum going into the locker room and they came out humming in an 11-7 win over the Huskies.

In a matchup of two teams with championship hopes, defending Division II champ Portsmouth was outplayed for most of the first half by Mt. Hope, last year’s D-III runner-up.

Gersen came to the rescue with a goal with one minute left. The Patriots continued to push on offense and led 9-7 after the third quarter, but dominated both sides of the field in the fourth to pull out the win.

It was a big day for Gersen, who led Portsmouth with three goals – including his 100th – and one assist. Oliver Melanson had a hat trick for the Patriots and Rafferty Dionne scored twice and had two assists. Jack Colna had 12 saves in the win for the Patriots, who finish the year at 14-3 and should be the No. 3 seed for the Division II playoffs.

Ben Browne led the way for Mt. Hope with two goals and Aeden Nelson scored one and had one assist. Ethan LaBollita finished with 16 saves in the loss, which drops the Huskies to 15-3 on the season but keeps them in the No. 1 spot for the Division III playoffs.

Westerly 10, Chariho 1

Needing a win to have a chance at the No. 1 seed in the Division II playoffs, the Bulldogs took care of business early and pulled out a 10-1 win in a weather-shortened game.

Westerly wasted little time taking control against its regional rival, getting two goals from Caleb Williams, two from Ian Morissette and one from Evan Morisette to take a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. The Bulldogs scored the first five of the second quarter before Morgan Campbell got Chariho on the board to make it 10-1 at halftime.

During the break a storm rolled through and lightning caused the game to be called at halftime. Westerly finishes the season with a 14-3 record and is tied for first in the RPI standings with East Greenwich, which closes its season on Thursday against Hendricken. Playing a Division I opponent should give the Avengers the necessary points to earn the top spot, regardless of outcome.

Chariho finishes the season with a 1-17 record.
