Xabi Alonso drops major Chelsea transfer updates in first press conference

Xabi Alonso has given updates on the future of several Chelsea superstars in his first press conference as manager.

Alonso addressed the media for the first time since his appointment on Monday and revealed the latest on potential transfers.

Enzo Fernandez saga latest

Enzo Fernandez has been heavily linked to a move away from Stamford Bridge to achieve his dream with Real Madrid.

The Argentina international, who has been starring at the World Cup, is understood to be Jose Mourinho’s top target this summer.

That’s despite Real releasing a statement earlier this month to deny that they have any interest in the Blues midfielder.

Either way, it appears the saga is going to continue and Alonso was asked about Fernandez’s future in his press conference.

The new Chelsea manager revealed: “We have spoken. As you can understand, what was said remains private.”

He was then asked whether he wants to keep the 25-year-old at the club, to which Alonso replied: “Yeah, yeah.”

Goodbye Garnacho?

As for Alejandro Garnacho, it seems Alonso is happy to sell him.

Chelsea are understood to be open to selling Garnacho this summer, after failing to make an impression since signing last year.

The Blues want a fee of £42.5million for the ex-Manchester United winger, who arrived at the club for £40m.

Alonso has been speaking about Garnacho’s situation and admitted that there is interest from other teams in him.

He said: “We have spoken with the sporting directors and there is interest in him from other clubs. Let’s see how it develops.

“Hopefully it finishes in the best possible way for all parties.”

Back in the squad

Another player with a questionable future at Chelsea is Nicolas Jackson, who has returned from his loan away.

Jackson spent last season with Bayern Munich, playing second-fiddle to Harry Kane in their Bundesliga-winning campaign.

He scored 11 goals in 34 appearances for the club – and he could now be set to make a comeback in the Premier League, which is something that Cole Palmer may be pleased with.

Alonso revealed: “Nico Jackson is joining the tour in Asia and we are looking forward to him working with us”.

Versatile signing

Away from those linked with exits, Alonso also spoke on his first Chelsea signing in Marco Palestra.

Palestra joined the club from Atalanta for £47m at the start of July, signing a six-year contract in London.

Alonso is a big fan, saying: “He has many great qualities for modern football. He can play in a back four or a back five, on the left.

“We need to keep working with him to adapt to the Premier League. He has a great mentality in terms of competitiveness and his hunger.”

After signing Palestra, Chelsea are also closing in on bringing in left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano.

talkSPORT understands the Blues are in advanced talks to sign Chavarria in a deal worth around £21.5million.
