Yankees’ Jasson Dominguez is on the way up

HOUSTON – Jasson Dominguez will be promoted Monday by the Yankees, per an organizational source, at least temporarily ending his exile at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In 24 games at the Class AAA affiliate, the switch-hitting outfielder is batting .326 (30-for-92) with three homers, 15 RBI, eight stolen bases and an .893 OPS.

After Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Astros at Daikin Park, ending an eight-game winning streak, the Yankees optioned losing pitcher Luis Gil to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

No immediate corresponding move was announced, and the Yanks are still likely to call up a pitcher before Monday’s game at Texas against the Rangers.

Having missed the last two games due to a tight right calf, Giancarlo Stanton remains a prime candidate to be placed on the 10-day injury list, creating the offensive opening for Dominguez.

Stanton was injured on the bases during Friday night’s 12-4 win at Houston.

“I know (Saturday) he felt like it was improved. He also feels like he got in front of it, a little bit,” manager Aaron Boone said earlier Sunday of Stanton’s condition.

Regarding a possible IL stint for Stanton, “I would think we’ll have a decision (Monday) one way or the other,” said Boone.

Plus, the Yankees are also coming up on a decision of when to activate shortstop Anthony Volpe, who is winding down his minor league rehab assignment.

Offensively, Volpe is “still getting there,’’ Boone said earlier Sunday, adding that “it’s only been two weeks of games’’ during the shortstop’s rehab stint.

“But I know he feels really good and feels ready to contribute.’’

Boone also acknowledged the impact of Jose Caballero’s speed, power and improved shortstop defense, flashing a strong arm, in Volpe’s absence.

Caballero is “playing at a really high level,” said Boone earlier Sunday. “Obviously, we think very highly of Anthony too, but those are answers for another day.”

But Caballero “has earned a lot of opportunities and has been right in the middle of us winning a lot of games. On balance he’s done a really nice job for us.”

As Volpe began his minor league rehab stint, GM Brian Cashman, when asked about Volpe returning to his starting shortstop role, said, “that’s always been the plan,” but added “ultimately that’ll be the manager’s call.”

Dominguez’s presence could impact the playing time of center fielder Trent Grisham, batting .180 in his first 81 at-bats, but with a .317 on-base percentage due to 19 walks. He also has four home runs and 16 RBI.

It was Grisham’s ascension in 2025, and Dominguez’s poor performance as a right-handed hitter and work-in-progress defense in left field that led to his decreased playing time.

Once Grisham accepted the Yankees’ $22.05 million free agent qualifying offer, along with the return of free agent outfielder Cody Bellinger (and the later signing of right-handed hitting outfielder Randal Grichuk) there wasn’t room for Dominguez – or Spencer Jones – to begin on the Yankees’ opening 26-man roster.
