BOYS TENNIS: Doubles teams reach semifinals of District 2 Championships

Abington Heights tennis players continued to dominate District 2 this season as both of the program’s doubles teams reached the Class 3A semifinals on Wednesday.

William Arp and teammate Liam Farrell, the top-seeded pairing, will play No. 5 Sean Rooney and Spencer Young of Crestwood.

The Abington Heights brother team of Brady Comstock and Bryce Comstock, the No. 2 seed, will face Valley View’s duo of Nick Burak and Billy Giovagnoli in the other semifinal.

In Class 2A, Holy Cross’ top-seeded team of Alex Harrison and Ray Zhang reached the semifinals and will play Frank Klimovitz and Daniel Dudrick of Holy Redeemer. Wyoming Seminary’s team of Stefan Zecar and Dhru Sudhakar will play Dallas’ team of Nate Linnen and Theo Barr, the No. 6 seed.

Semifinal matches will be played on Thursday at noon at the Birchwood Racquet Club.

The Class 3A matches were at Wilkes University, with Abington Heights’ team of Arp and Farrell winning a pair of matches in straight sets, losing only one game. The Comets defeated Delaware Valley’s Ben Ben Krules-Koi Desandis, 6-1, 6-0, and then earned a win over Wilkes-Barre Area’s Robert Fuentes and Josiah Angel, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Brady and Bryce Comstock were equally overpowering. The Comets’ second-seeded team defeated Delaware Valley’s Eli Wilson and Jackson Hazard, 6-0, 6-0, then beat Scranton’s Veer Patel and Yax Patel, 6-0, 6-1.

Crestwood’s team of Rossi and Young won a grueling three-set match with Valley View’s team of Kevin O’Shea and Cooper Rawlings, 6-4, 4-6, 9-7. The teammates then defeated West Scranton’s Matthew D’Augostine and Aaron Castro, the No. 4 seed, in another marathon battle, 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-1, to reach the semifinals.

Valley View’s other pairing of Nick Burak and Billy Giovagnoli, the team’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, defeated Crestwood’s Jacob Graybel and Hayden Harrison, 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, the Cougars, seeded sixth, upset Wyoming Valley West’s Gadgidas Reisinger and Jake Gluchowski, 6-3, 6-0.

In Class 2A at Kirby Park, Holy Cross’ team of Harrison and Zhang, who both reached the semifinals of the District 2 Singles Tournament, defeated Mid Valley’s Zach Kalinowski and Ethan Johnson, 6-0, 6-0. The Crusaders then reached the semifinals with a win over Scranton Prep’s Matthew Cohen and Paul Dominick, 6-0, 6-2.

Holy Redeemer’s team of Klimovitz and Dudrick played three matches to earn a spot in the semifinals. The Royals beat MMI Prep’s Joe Mayernick and Sharan Parikh, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round. They upset the No. 5 seed, James Bobeck and Thomas Hill from Wyoming Seminary, 6-3, 7-5, and upset the fourth-seeded team of Lewis Smith and Michael Reiprich of Honesdale, 6-4, 6-4.

Wyoming Seminary’s team of Zecar and Sudhakar beat Scranton Prep’s Anthony Delayo and Myles Frieder, 6-1 and 6-0, and Tunkhannock’s team of Ben Landon and Martin Ortiz, 6-1 and 6-0.

Dallas’ pairing of Linnen and Barr, the No. 6 seed, also had three matches on Day 1. The Mountaineers beat Dunmore’s Felix Bautista and Carter Grande, 6-0, 6-0; Wyoming Area’s Joseph Allegrucci and Trevor Winslow, 6-1, 6-1; and Holy Cross’ team of Alfred Betts and Dwalkyr Baniya, 6-4, 6-4.
