Priyansh Arya’s bizarre run-out: Dickwella’s foot blocks bat in chaotic Dambulla incident

Priyansh Arya was unlucky with his dismissal during India A’s tri-series opener against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla on Tuesday.

The chaos began in the 13th over, triggered by a miscommunication between Arya and India A captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Gaikwad pushed for a second run, but Arya was not convinced and hesitated. By the time the pair realised they were in trouble, Gaikwad had already crossed to the striker’s end, which meant Arya was the one exposed to danger.

The decision was referred to the third umpire, who studied the replays and determined that Gaikwad was safe and Arya was sent back to the pavilion.

What the third umpire appeared to overlook was that as Arya slid his bat forward to complete the run, it caught under Dickwella’s shoe.

The wicketkeeper had stretched across to collect the throw coming in from the deep, and in doing so, his foot sat directly in the path of the bat’s slide. The contact delayed the bat by a fraction of a second, which was enough to make the difference.

Without that obstruction, Arya would almost certainly have grounded his bat in time, and it would have been Gaikwad facing the consequences.

Dickwella saw both batters in the crease and immediately threw the ball to the bowler’s end, where the stumps were broken.

Arya was dismissed for 32 off 32 balls, an innings that included four boundaries and a six. It was a knock that had looked set to steady India A after the early losses of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Prabhsimran Singh, but it was cut short.

However, Gaikwad went on to score a century, which ensured that India put up 277 runs on the board on a tricky wicket.
