<p>This season, after sitting out the first three matches, Okonkwo established himself as Wrexham’s undisputed number one, starting 39 consecutive games for the Dragons in the Championship.</p>

<p>There was significant speculation that Okonkwo would be included in Eric Chelle’s squad for the international friendlies against Iran and Jordan in March. However, that did not hapoen at the time as his FIFA clearance was still pending.</p>
<p>On April 6, it was officially confirmed that <a href=”https://soccernet.ng/2026/04/super-eagles-nwabali-fifa-rarthur-okonkwo.html”>Okonkwo had completed his switch from England, making him eligible for the Super Eagles</a>.</p>

<p>But coincidentally, his playing time has dipped since then; the 22-year-old has featured in only one match since his eligibility was confirmed. </p>
<p>His last appearance came on April 12 against Birmingham City, after which he was relegated to the bench with Danny Ward taking over his spot.</p>

<p>Okonkwo’s performances in League One were stellar, but as Wrexham gained promotion to the Championship, the club signed the experienced Danny Ward to lead from the back. </p>
<p>Ward suffered an initial setback by an injury in August, allowing Okonkwo to seize the starting role and excel.</p>
<p>However, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson opted for a change after Okonkwo conceded 14 goals across a difficult five-game stretch. As a result, Ward was reinstated as the starter for the final four games of the season.</p>
<h3 class=”wp-block-heading”>Can Okonkwo Break Into the Super Eagles for the Unity Cup?</h3>
<p>Despite his recent eligibility, questions linger regarding Okonkwo’s path into the Nigerian starting XI.</p>
<p>Stanley Nwabali remains the undisputed first choice. Although currently a free agent, Nwabali is expected to retain his position once he secures a new club and returns to regular action. </p>

<p>Meanwhile, Maduka Okoye has solidified his status as the second choice; his exceptional form in Serie A this season makes him untouchable for the squad ahead of Okonkwo. </p>
<p>Francis Uzoho also remains a key figure due to his vast international experience and recent improvements.</p>
<p>However, the upcoming off-season presents an opportunity. With Eric Chelle stating that he will use the Unity Cup to test fringe players, Okonkwo could finally earn his maiden invitation. </p>
<p>He may also be considered for the high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal.</p>
