Bethune-Cookman baseball picked up its program-record 36th regular-season win with a 23-1 thumping of Grambling State on May 14 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The victory eclipsed the Wildcats’ previous best of 35 wins set back in 2002.
Bethune-Cookman left no doubt in its record-setting affair. The Wildcats led 18-0 after three innings, including a 10-run third to cap the early scoring spree, and finished with eight players recording at least two RBIs.
The victory stamped an impressive season into the school’s record books, as the Wildcats previously made headlines for their back-to-back road victories over No. 19 Florida and then-ranked defending national champion LSU.
Bethune-Cookman also has a pair of wins over South Florida as part of its resume that extends outside the SWAC.
The Wildcats will need four wins from their remaining two games against Grambling, the SWAC Tournament and potentially the NCAA Tournament to record the program’s first-ever 40-win season, as the 2002 squad’s 39-win campaign still stands as the winningest in B-CU history.
After Thursday night’s rout, which was Bethune-Cookman’s largest margin of victory this season, a 38-win regular season is on the table for head coach Jonathan Hernandez’s squad.
Another victory over the Tigers will clinch the SWAC regular season title, the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and a perfect 10-0 record in conference series this season.
