Kansas City Chiefs‘ Patrick Mahomes is on the comeback from his ACL injury suffered last season, and No. 15 has been a participant as the AFC West franchise began OTAs this week.
Of course, Mahomes isn’t full go, only participating in some drills with a big brace on his left knee.
Having made it known early on that his goal was to start in Week 1, many think that is a lofty goal , and one that might not be attainable, but Mahomes has made up his mind — he’s going to do everything possible to make it happen.
But when players do get on the field, we can see that they aren’t themselves with the mental handbrake firmly applied, however Mahomes has assured fans that when he does step on that field, he’ll be all gas, no brakes.
“I’m going to be honest with you, I know that whenever I get out there on the field and I feel like I can be Patrick Mahomes, I’ll be Patrick Mahomes,” Mahomes said. “I’ve never not felt like 100 percent; even when I have a sprained ankle I feel like I’m 100 percent of what I can be. So, I’m going to have that mindset when I get on the field, and when I get on the field, I’m going to be myself. I’m not going to hold back.”

Mahomes making good progress in ACL recovery
We are only early in the offseason, but to have Mahomes already dropping back, throwing, and executing handoffs to his running backs, that is a great sign.
Of course, we can’t get too ahead of ourselves, as we know the path back to full health from an ACL injury is a long one. But Patrick is hitting his markers early in his recovery, and the fact that he’s doing drills as OTAs begin is a good sign of what’s to come.
Yes, the Chiefs will be cautious, and Mahomes will be pushing himself as hard and as far as he can to make sure he’s on the field in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos.
But will he be “Mahomes” when he does? He seems to think so.
