Trades in the same division in Major League Baseball aren’t very common, though there are times when they make a lot of sense for both sides. Right now, the Chicago Cubs can use any help they can get on the mound, while the Pittsburgh Pirates are looking for a third baseman.
Right away, there’s an obvious trade candidate there with Matt Shaw, as long as the Pirates would be willing to move on from some sort of rotation help, even if Chicago has to give up more.
That’s why the latest from FanSided makes a lot of sense when linking the two sides to a potential trade at the deadline.
“If the Cubs are willing to trade Shaw within the division, Pittsburgh has the right mix of pitching depth and offensive need to strike up a conversation. Veteran workhorse Mitch Keller has been a staple in trade rumors for a couple years now, while minor-league arms like Hunter Barco, Antwone Kelly and Thomas Harrington could all hold appeal for New York as developmental bets,” Christopher Kline wrote.
I’m a bit skeptical that the Pirates are going to want to move on from big league arms for Shaw, just because he hasn’t really proven a whole lot in Major League Baseball. However, it’s also fair to note that some of those starters in Pittsburgh haven’t done so yet.
Regardless, this is one of those ideas that just makes too much sense, even if the two sides don’t want to make a trade with each other.
