There wasn’t much hype surrounding the Colorado Rockies heading into the 2026 season. They were coming off a season where they lost 119 games and didn’t do much over the winter break.

However, they would get off to a solid start this year, holding a 13-14 record through April, but May has been a different story. They currently sit with a 20-36 record, 15.5 games out of first place in the National League West.

Pitching has not really helped this team, especially wth Ryan Feltner and Chase Dollander dealing with elbow issues, but it’s not just on the pitching staff. The offense has also had bits of struggles.

Not everyone on the team is struggling with the bat in their hands. Troy Johnston is hitting a team-high .321, while Mickey Moniak has blasted 12 home runs so far.

The one player who is not helping the team out much in the batter’s box is Ezequiel Tovar. To his credit, he’s not known for his bat, but Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer wants to see more.

“Tovar is good enough with the glove that he doesn’t need his bat to carry him. Even so, you want an everyday shortstop to be doing better than a .578 OPS. He also has a .466 OPS at Coors Field, which should at least be a misdemeanor in Denver County.”

For context, an average MLB player carries an OPS of around .700. Tovar has a .578 OPS for a team that has the easiest stadium to crush baseballs in.

His limited offense is not helping Colorado dig itself out of the hole they have created this past month. But even if Tovar could turn it around at the plate, that still might not be enough.
