Luke Loucks kept building all the way to the final hours of the portal window. Wake Forest transfer forward Cooper Schwieger has committed to Florida State, per On3’s Joe Tipton, giving the Seminoles one final, and significant front court addition to cap a historically productive offseason.
Schwieger, a 6-foot-10 junior from Overland Park, Kansas, appeared in 34 games for Wake Forest this past season with 11 starts, totaling 172 points and 84 rebounds while ranking second on the team in blocked shots with 20. The production was a step back from his breakout sophomore campaign at Valparaiso, where he averaged 15.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while earning All-Missouri Valley Second Team honors, leading the league in rebounding average, finishing first in blocked shots with 68, and recording 10 double-doubles across 34 starts.
The pedigree that attracted Wake Forest to Schwieger in the first place remains fully intact. As a freshman at Valparaiso in 2023-24, Schwieger was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. He was only the fourth Valpo freshman to win a league Newcomer or Freshman of the Year award, and was just the fourth MVC freshman since 1992-93 to average at least 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, joining Southern Illinois’ Marcus Domask, Creighton’s Doug McDermott, and Tulsa’s Shea Seals.
Schwieger joins a Florida State front court that already includes Sebastian Rancik, Shon Abaev, and incoming freshman Marcis Ponder, giving Loucks one of the deepest and most physically imposing rotations in the ACC. He will have one year of eligibility remaining in Tallahassee.
With Schwieger now officially in the fold, Florida State closes the books on a transfer portal cycle that produced five additions, Taylor, Robinson II, Rancik, Abaev, and now Schwieger, and vaulted the program to a top-five national ranking in On3’s Transfer Portal Team Rankings. The pieces are in place. Year 2 under Loucks begins now.
