Leon Goretzka’s time as a Bayern Munich player has officially come to an end, capped off with winning both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in what’s been a truly remarkable season for the German Rekordmeister despite falling short in the Champions League. Bayern scored a record-setting 122 goals in the Bundesliga, beat some of the leagues top teams to get to the Pokal final, and were close to having beat both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain to get to the Champions League final in Budapest, Hungary.

For Goretzka, his time at Bayern comes to an end after eight seasons – a tenure during which he’s collected seven Bundesliga titles, one Champions League title, three DFB-Pokals, three German Supercups (DFL/Franz Beckenbauer), one FIFA Club World Cup, and one UEFA Supercup. In total, Goretzka made a total of 312 competitive appearances across all competitions, tallying 51 goals and 53 assists along the way.

There were several different transfer windows where Goretzka was linked with a move away from Bayern due to inconsistencies in his form and being out of favor with either Julian Nagelsmann or Thomas Tuchel after he had been a stalwart in midfield alongside Joshua Kimmich under Hansi Flick.

Now, the question is what’s next for Goretzka? There’s been several rumors linking him with a move to AC Milan and Italian journalist Nicolò Schira has reported that the midfielder’s agents are set to have meetings with the Serie A outfit this week. The Rossoneri would like to sign Goretzka on a free transfer as a free agent and are prepared to offer him a contract through 2029 with the potential of a one-year extension to 2030.

The Milan Fallout

AC Milan failing to qualify for the Champions League has resulted in a clearing house of sorts from the club’s ownership. Along with manager Massimiliano Allegri, CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and head of scouting Geoffrey Moncada have all been sacked with immediate effect, which could affect Goretzka’s standing. He was a transfer target of Allegri’s, but now there will be different personnel in charge at some point in the very near future and it remains to be seen whether or not they would still want to bring in the former Bochum, Schalke, and Bayern midfielder.

For now, though, Goretzka’s focus will be on World Cup preparations with the German national team.
