The hope is that the New York Mets avoided a serious injury with right-hander Clay Holmes after taking a 111 mph line drive off his leg.
Surgery seems to be an option right now, but the hope is that the Mets will avoid it. Still, it remains uncertain what will happen over the next few days regarding a decision about his future.
Depending on what happens over the next few days, the Mets will have a better feel of where things stand. Currently 20-26, I don’t think what happens with Holmes should end up with him staying in New York.
If the right-hander, who once played for the crosstown New York Yankees, is healthy and can be traded, the Mets absolutely have to move on from him.
“One of the most prized commodities at the trade deadline was going to be Mets starter Clay Holmes (1.86 ERA), who’s expected to opt out of his contract after the season, but with a fractured tibia, he may be staying put,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote.
I was impressed with what the Mets did this weekend, and I think they showed a lot of fight.
I also believe there’s a possibility this can turn the season around. However, I also want to be cautious about those remarks, given how poorly the Mets have played throughout the year. Factor that in with all the injuries they’re dealing with, and to me, any player who is healthy and has some bit of trade value who makes sense to trade needs to be dealt at this deadline.
Unfortunately for people who want Holmes around, he fits that description.
