The New York Mets‘ decision to move on from Pete Alonso was obviously the wrong one when it happened just a few months ago. Instead of giving him the money that he wanted, the Mets decided to play around and try to get cute.
As a result, Alonso is now with the Baltimore Orioles, and New York doesn’t have any solid answers at first base because Jorge Polanco has been injured for most of the year.
There were many positives to having Alonso on the roster. Obviously, the biggest one is that the guy can leave the yard at any moment, being the all-time leader in Mets history in home runs.
He has 272 home runs throughout his career and is well-regarded as one of the top power hitters baseball has ever seen. Alonso was also someone who stayed on the field each and every day, which is why this crazy stat about who he was replaced with in Polanco shows that the Mets made the wrong decision on more than one front.
“First baseman Pete Alonso missed 24 games in his seven years with the Mets. Jorge Polanco, Alonso’s replacement, has missed 31 games in his seven weeks with the Mets,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote.
I actually don’t mind Polanco as a player and think that had the Mets kept Alonso and brought him in, it would have been viewed as a good thing. Polanco isn’t really a first baseman, so he could have played somewhere else in the infield or been viewed as a utility guy, with Alonso on the roster.
However, it’s almost impossible to ignore this injury now, as he’s missed more than a month straight without appearing in a game since April 14 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
