Michigan State football post spring depth chart analysis: Running Back

Michigan State football has completed the spring practice schedule and are now moving their focus to summer conditioning before the start of fall camp. With the first spring of the Pat Fitzgerald era in East Lansing coming to an end, the coaching staff should have a ton of clarity on where things stand with their depth chart heading into the fall.

For the Spartans, it is interesting to look at this new roster, and how the pieces may fall before the season opener against Toledo. Spartans Wire is going to attempt to piece the depth chart together, analyzing how we think the new roster will unfold in a depth chart manner.

Next up on the list is running backs, which is a room that saw a very big overhaul this past offseason. Bringing in three transfer running backs, this room is wide open, with a full open competition beginning for the ability to tote the rock this upcoming season.

Here is how we see it shaking out:

  • 1st string: Cam Edwards (Rs Sr) OR Marvis Parrish (Soph)
  • 2nd string: Jaz Patterson (Rs Sr) OR Jace Clarizio (Rs Fr)
  • 3rd string: Brandon Tullis (Jr)

Analysis: Edwards is going to be the lead back, but the days of bell cows are over, and someone is going to have to take that 1B role in the backfield. Right now, my money is on Parrish, although any of the four backs behind Edwards is capable of getting the job.

All in all, this backfield is filled with veteran depth and talent, making it a position of strength for the Spartans heading into the all-important first year of the Fitzgerald era.
