ROCKAWAY — Rohan Tucker has a simple goal for every meet: “to win everything, basically. That’s it.” The Madison senior left the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference East Championships with a trio of gold medals.
Tucker swept all three sprints, though he had a little trouble with the clock in the 200 meters on May 6. It had started early for his heat, giving him and the rest of the runners disappointing times.
After being advanced to the an extra finals heat, Tucker crossed the line in 21.99 seconds.
Morristown senior Kayla Ewing also left Morris Hills with three golds, in the 200 meters and both hurdles races. Ewing, who plans to compete at Columbia University, is part of a new Colonials’ hurdles trend. After finishing second in the intermediates on May 5, Morristown junior Matthew Kot took home gold in the 110-meter hurdles the following day.
“I knew the field was deep, but I had to put in my best effort,” Kot said. “We’re really developing the whole hurdle team. We pull each other forward to be the best we can.”
Track team champions crowned
Stephen Shih was Morris Hills’ lone champion, but that was enough for the boys to become the first back-to-back NJAC team champions in the meet’s 16-year history. Led by Shih, who took gold in the long jump for the second year in a row, the Scarlet Knights scored points in 13 of the 16 events.
They had also won Morris County Relays last week.
“I’m ready for the pressure,” said senior Marcus Petit-Frere, who was second in discus and had a PR for fourth in shot for his first individual medals at a championship meet.
“I’d heard it was a little closer, so the points really mattered. I pushed a little more.”
The West Morris girls earned their first NJAC plaque with just 17 competitors. Accustomed to piling up points behind Alanna Parkes, Kelly Kaasmann and other sprinters, the Wolfpack showed off depth at the two-day meet.
Senior Addison Weber and junior Brooke Wilson moved way up from their seeds, running the last mile together to place fifth and sixth in the 3,200 on May 6. Wilson dropped a 30-second PR, and declared 2026 West Morris’ year.
The Wolfpack girls had claimed the small-school plaque at Morris County Relays a week ago. West Morris also posted the fastest Morris/Sussex 4×100 and 4×400 times at Penn Relays, bringing home a wagon wheel trophy for a heat win in the latter.
“It’s amazing,” Weber said. “Normally at these big meets, our distance team isn’t that strong. We’re stronger and better and faster than ever.”
More multi-medalists
➤ Chatham senior Marcus Valenzuela, who has signed with American University, won both distance races.
➤ Randolph junior Carly Renna won the 1,600 on Tuesday and the 800 on Wednesday, both times holding off Montville freshman Gabriella Pelov.
➤ Montville senior Anthony Agnoli was first in the shot put and discus.
