Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has had an eventful year as he went from being a member of a championship-level teal in the Denver Nuggets to a rebuilding franchise in the Nets. Brooklyn was able to unlock the next level of Porter’s game to the point that he almost became an All-Star, but he still took some time to react to a certain playoff team losing.
“Yes, shouldn’t have traded me, man,” Porter said when asked during a livestream with streamer N3on if the Nuggets would have beaten the Minnesota Timberwolves in the playoffs with him. As many Nets fans know, the reason that Porter is in Brooklyn is because Denver traded him, along with a 2032 first-round pick, to the Nets in exchange for forward Cam Johnson.
“Honestly, I’m living my best life in Brooklyn. Even though we didn’t do well this year, I see the future,” Porter said about his future with the Nets, seemingly acknowledging the fact that he’s somewhere else now. “We’re the youngest team in the league. We got a lot of money to spend. I think we’re gonna get a really good player in the draft as well. I think we’ll be alright.”
Porter, 27, is coming off the best season of his eight-year career as he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line. Like Porter alluded to, the Nuggets could have used more in their series against Minnesota given that the Timberwolves were able to win the series despite not having superstar Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo available for some of the series due to their respective injuries.
Center Nikola Jokic and guard Jamal Murray, Denver’s two best players, each averaged at least 23.7 points per game, but combined to shoot just 40.0% from the field while Johnson actually had a solid series by averaging 14.2 points per contest on 50.0% shooting from the floor. The world will never know if the Nuggets would have been able to change their fate with Porter on the roster, but he took the time to discuss his future in Brooklyn.
