After a successful inaugural season under the Bucky McMillan regime, Texas A&M basketball has promoted assistant Warren Fitzpatrick from assistant GM and director of basketball operations to general manager. The team also hired Clay Smith from Ole Miss to fill the Aggies’ vacated director of basketball operations role.
Fitzpatrick has a long history with McMillan, with the two first crossing paths when Fitzpatrick played for McMillan at Mountain Brook High School. After finishing his undergraduate degree, Fitzpatrick joined McMillan’s staff at Samford in 2021 as a graduate assistant. He was promoted to director of basketball operations in 2022 and once more to chief of staff for his final season at Samford.
Smith had a more convoluted path to his new home in Aggieland, working as an assistant or head high school basketball coach for three years after graduating from Mississippi State. He joined Ole Miss as a graduate assistant in 2024 and was elevated to director of basketball operations prior to last season.
These moves can be seen as a vote of confidence by the school in favor of McMillan and Bucky Ball. McMillan himself recently received a contract extension, and he has ostensibly been granted the authority to secure his preferred candidates to fill out the basketball staff.
