Throughout the event at UFC Macau, the Chinese fans no doubt had to have been wondering if the joke was on them or something.
When the co-main event landed, Alonzo Menifield really took that feeling over the top. No Chinese fighters had their hand raised on the undercard at UFC Macau, and the last hope before the main event was Zhang Mingyang.
Menifield (18-6-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC) was a sizable underdog in his light heavyweight fight against Mingyang (19-8 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 277 co-feature at Galaxy Macau. Mingyang, by most accounts, was expected to return to form after an upset loss to Johnny Walker this past August. Prior to that loss, Mingyang’s first three fights in the UFC were bonus-winning first-round knockouts.
But Menifield had other plans, and after several minutes of back-and-forth trading, he clipped Mingyang and kept the pressure on to take him out with 45 seconds left in the opening round — and leave the Chinese fans stunned at a home hero’s second straight KO loss.
Check out the angle of Menifield’s finish below that gives some appreciation to how he was able to cut off Mingyang’s escape routes to put him away.
