Waukee Northwest, Xavier win Iowa high school boys tennis team titles

Waukee Northwest and Cedar Rapids Xavier won championships at the Iowa high school boys state team tournament on Wednesday, June 3.

The Wolves defeated Iowa City West in the championship, 5-0, on June 3 after also blanking Dowling Catholic in the quarterfinals and Pleasant Valley in the semifinals on June 2 by identical 5-0 scores.

The Wolves swept doubles play against West.

Northwest’s No. 1 team of Maarten Beekhuis and Vincent Flynn downed West’s Ary Harwani and Pierce Hribar in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0, and the Wolves’ No. 2 team of Vivek Kothari and Thomas Wang swept the Trojans’ Aaron Kang and Jensen Lin by 6-2 and 6-4 scores. West’s No. 3 team of Matthew Dockery-Jackson and Prabhas Gupta put up a good fight in the No. 3 doubles match, but they fell to Northwest’s Noah Tingley and Miles Steffensmeier in three sets — 6-2, 6-7 (7-4), 10-5.

In singles play, Tingley defeated Dockery-Jackson in the No. 4 match, 6-2 and 6-3, and the Wolves took the No. 1 match by forfeit to claim its second-consecutive championship.

Johnston defeated Pleasant Valley in the 2A third-place match, 5-1.

The 1A competition saw Cedar Rapids Xavier bring home another title with a tight 5-4 win over Wahlert Catholic.

Xavier took two of three doubles matches in the 1A title matchup. The Saints’ Jacob Schmit and Bennett Link swept Wahlert’s Cal Martineau and Nick Smith by 6-0 and 6-4 scores in the No. 1 match, and Xavier’s Charlie LeGrand and Grant Golding took the No. 2 match, 6-4, 6-7(3-7) 1-0 (10-4).

Wahlert’s Jensen Hill and Anders Hill claimed the No. 3 match over Xavier’s Carson Sorg and Brady Hoover, 6-0 and 6-2.

In 1A singles competition, LeGrand defeated Martineau in the No. 1 match, 6-2 and 6-2; Schmit downed Evan Anderson in the No. 2 match, 6-2 and 6-0, and Golding won the No. 5 match. Wahlert got victories from Jensen Hill, Miller and Anders Hill in the Nos. 3, 4 and 6 matches, respectively.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton edged Central DeWitt for third place in 1A, 5-4.
