Michigan State basketball is considered to be a fringe top five team entering next season, according to a national analyst from The Field of 68.
Rob Dauster of The Field of 68 has released his latest updated rankings for the 2026-27 season and to no surprise Michigan State is near the top. The Spartans came in at No. 6 in the country in Dauster’s latest poll, falling behind only Florida (No. 1), Michigan (No. 2), UConn (No. 3), Duke (No. 4) and Illinois (No. 5). The Spartans dropped one spot from Dauster’s last poll, with the Fighting Illini moving ahead of them into the top five.
After Michigan State at No. 6, the next Big Ten team in Dauster’s list was Indiana at No. 21. After that there was Purdue at No. 22, USC at No. 24 and Nebraska at No. 25. So it does appear there’s a clear tier gap between Michigan, Illinois and Michigan State from the rest of the conference.
