FOXBOROUGH, Mass — Even Drake Maye hasn’t been able to ignore all the noise regarding a potential A.J. Brown trade.
“Yeah, I think it’s part of the NFL,” he told reporters on Wedneday following Day 2 of OTAs. “They throw names around here, around every team, depending on whoever looks best in the graphic in the jersey on social media.”
However, while he knows Brown is a talented player, Maye always stays where his feet are and is simply focusing on the receivers currently on the roster.
“I’m really just focused. We’ve got some new guys in here that I’m working with,” Maye continued. “I know there’s a lot of talk with that, but if he ends up being on our team, great. What a great player. And if he doesn’t, we’ve still got to work these guys here. It’s a tough balance, but I know he’s a phenomenal player.”
The Patriots did bring in a talented veteran receiver this offseason in Romeo Doubs, and Maye also spoke about how he’s been building chemistry with the former Green Bay Packers weapon.
“I think it’s working. I think it’s building,” Maye explained. “He’s eager. That’s the best thing you see in a new receiver, in a new offense like Romeo. It’s different terminology. He’s been in an offense for a couple of years with the same quarterback. I kind of have to learn how he likes to do things, how I like to see it when he’s running routes. And I think it’s just going to be better and better. He’s a great player. He’s already been a great player in this league. So, looking forward to building that connection and finding his role in this offense.”
That connection was evident when Maye hit Doubs with the first pass, threading the needle on the first throw of the 11-on-11 period during Wednesday’s session.
However, Doubs plus Brown will be a deadly combination, as well as the other weapons the Patriots have in the room. Now, it’s just a waiting game until June 1.
