The Jets showed Breece Hall the money, it’s time for him to earn it

Perhaps things are truly changing for the better in Florham Park for the New York Jets and head coach Aaron Glenn.

In the past, most contract negotiations with current players looking for new deals would be dragged out into training camp. But, general manager Darren Mougey was determined to do right by running back Breece Hall, agreeing to a three-year, $45 million contract extension with one of his top offensive players.

The new deal is a huge win for Mougey as it avoids what could have been a very lengthy holdout from Hall, who was given the franchise tag earlier in the offseason.  Hall’s new contract includes $29 million in guaranteed money and makes him the fourth highest paid running back in the league behind Christian McCaffrey, Saquan Barkley and, most recently, De’von Achane.

For the Jets, it’s another important piece retained to an offense that has potential to be a very dangerous unit under new offensive coordinator Frank Reich.

Besides Hall and Garrett Wilson, the Jets traded for quarterback Geno Smith and used two of their first-round picks at the 2026 NFL Draft to select Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq and Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr.  Rounding out this unit is Adonai Mitchell, acquired in the Sauce Gardner trade last year and tight end Mason Taylor, the team’s second-round pick in 2025.

For Hall, he got what he wanted.  It’s no secret that he has a high opinion of himself and wanted to be paid like a top running back.  He’s been a good soldier for the most part during all of the losing seasons he endured with the Jets, even when his cryptic tweets voicing his displeasure and mopey attitude made it look like he had no desire to stay in New York.

But, to quote Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben from the Spider-Man universe, “With great power comes great responsibility.”  The Jets did right by Hall and paid him like a top running back. Now, it’s time for the running back to make good on their investment.  Hall’s numbers have been fine, but it’s debatable as to whether they rise to the pay grade of a top running back.  In four years, his only 1,000 yard season was in 2025 and he needed a garbage-time touchdown against the New England Patriots in a game the Jets were being blown out handedly to achieve that.

Mougey declined multiple trade offers during last year’s deadline, a clesr sign he wanted to keep Hall to be his lead running back. He added plenty of weapons for new quarterback Geno Smith and only made one change to the offensive line, signing former Las Vegas Raiders guard Dylan Parham to replace John Simpson. Hall had to be very happy with these moves as there is no way he’s signing an extension to stay with a franchise that holds the longest active playoff drought in all of sports. It also shows that Hall believes in Glenn and Mougey’s vision of the team and their future.

At the end of the day, Both sides are very happy with how this turned out and ready to put this behind them. Everyone wins with this deal, including the fans, who are huge supporters of Hall and are thrilled to see one of their favorites staying in New York for the foreseeable future.

With great power comes great responsibility.

It’s time for Hall to be a leader alongside Garrett Wilson in turning things around for this franchise.   Fans and beat writers need to start holding him accountable when he’s not playing well and Hall needs to hold himself accountable as well. The days of cryptic social media messages and a mopey attitude after games are over.

Breece Hall is officially out of excuses.  He got his money.  It’s time for him to go out and earn it.
